Footwear and Stock Co-ordinator

Sara Wan

Shoes and boots play a more important role in a play than one might think. Of course, they have to suit the period, costume and style of the production, and be comfortable to wear. But shoes can also reflect the character the actor is playing, and affect the way they walk.

If you have a shoe fetish combined with organizational and people skills, working in a theatre can be a dream come true, although you may not easily find employment, since only major companies have the luxury of someone who deals specifically with footwear. The Royal National Theatre in London is such a company, and it is where Sara Wan works. The theatre houses a store of 5,000 pairs of boots and shoes, arranged according to style and colour, on shelves in sliding cupboards more normally used for archive material. Sara’s office is a floor below. Its walls and door are covered with pictures of shoes, some humorous, such as a cartoon of a woman sitting disdainfully in a shoe shop, surrounded by dozens of open boxes of shoes, while the assistant delves into yet another, to take out a gun.

Sara herself was wearing smart leather boots in a rather unusual shade of mushroom, which matched her top. She is charming. Interestingly, her father is Hong Kong Chinese, and only two generations ago, one of her relatives by marriage had concubines, with bound feet. Girls’ toes were broken and bound down towards the heel so that the foot fitted tiny shoes. Considered beautiful, it prohibited walking.
