âSome rehearsal dinner.â
âNot a dinner. A party.â
âYeah. A pizza party.â
âI thought you wanted some help with the planning.â
âAnd itâs traditionally the groomâs responsibilityâor at least his side of the familyâto arrange the rehearsal dinner.â
âAnd thatâs exactly what I did,â Leo claimed, looking particularly smug. âSo I fully discharged my obligation.â
Leo had completely arranged the rehearsal dinner, only telling her that it was to be at Riverheart. That had made sense since the wedding was at the estate and they certainly had the ability to entertain almost any size group.
But heâd kept it very simple.
Rather than some big formal spread or even a casual dinner party (neither of those being her style at all), Leo had pizzas delivered to Riverheart. Thus the four of themâthe wedding party, with Nina and Garner as matron of honor and best man, respectivelyâhad dined in the kitchen rather than out on the patio since it had been already prepared for the following dayâs ceremony. The chief justice, the officiant at the nuptials, had declined to stay for dinner. Milla had the sense that she wanted to leave the younger folks to themselves.
Instead of keeping the guest list to thirty, it had expanded to around fifty, thus expanding Millaâs anxiety. The additional attendees had not come about due to any last-minute additions to the list by the bride or groom. The chief justice, being pragmatic and subtle, had gently suggested that not only the justicesâ law clerks be invited but that the governor, the First Daughter, and the governorâs chief of staff also be extended an invitation.
While Milla hadnât minded inviting the clerks, sheâd initially resisted including someone as high up as the governor. She was still not accustomed to the status her position imparted, and she often forgot that her groom was a more important official than she was. She had a lot to learn about protocol.
âNow that we have the place to ourselves, what shall we do?â Leo asked.
Dinner was over; Nina and Garner were gone. Although theyâd invited them to stay overnight at Riverheart, the couple had declined, instead preferring to spend the night with Ninaâs parents in a small town outside Louisville.
Theyâd already buried a bottle of Old Garnet at the edge of the patio a few weeks earlier with the help of those two. Lo and behold, the forecast for their wedding day contained nothing but sunny skies even if a bit muggy and hot. Milla had heard of that superstitionâbeing from bourbon country ensured itâbut she hadnât put much stock in the practice. But Leo had gone along, not so much for the perceived supernatural protective powers of the ritual but for the fun. They most definitely planned to open the thing for a toast on their wedding day and imbibe.
As they strolled in the garden in the still-abundant light, Milla sensed that Leo was of the same state of mind she was: not quite sure what to do.
Restless.
Nervous.
A bit scared, that flicker of apprehension in the pit of the stomach before embarking on a long but much-anticipated journey.
