CHAPTER FOURTEEN

WELL, THAT WAS easy, Jessica thought. Maybe a little too easy. She’d assumed walking into Hell and swiping the Kaboraz grimoire would entail some sort of battle, or at least a certain level of discomfort, but in the end no one from their party had as much as chipped a fingernail. They’d gotten sweaty and kind of dirty, but there’d been no demons for them to fight, no sentries to destroy. Not even any sacrifices to make. If anything, the group had come out ahead after their journey, having gained a new supernatural ally in the hellhound they’d rescued. Now that he was free, Cerberus seemed a lot friendlier and eager to help them with whatever they needed.

Jessica should’ve been pleased by the mission’s outcome. She should’ve felt at ease. Instead she was a ball of nervous anxiety.

Why are we all here? she wondered as they returned to Aaron’s house just after midnight. If they weren’t here to use magic and fight with their supernatural powers, then why did Nathan need them all by his side to help cure him? Or had they been wrong about him needing them here? She worried there’d be unpleasant answers to all the questions swirling around in her brain, but she tried to stay positive. She forced a smile as she joined everyone else in the house’s large study that night.

Sitting with Nathan on the leather couch, she watched Chloe set the Kaboraz grimoire on the desk and flip it open. Without saying a word to anyone, the nosferim sat down, brought out her notebook, and started hunting through the ancient tome for the vampire reversal spell. Everyone else took out their phones and read a book or scrolled through social media. Marta found a tennis ball in a closet and convinced Cerberus to play fetch with her in the hallway. It was almost half an hour before Chloe finally stood up and announced she’d found what she was looking for.

“What’s it say?” Kiefer wanted to know. “What ingredients do we need?”

“Nothing too out of the ordinary. I believe the stores we brought with us from the safehouse should yield all the necessary components.”

Jessica let out a sigh of relief and leaned her head against Nathan’s shoulder.

“However,” Chloe added, and the ominous note in her voice made everyone sit up straighter. “The spell does say it will not work on every vampire. In fact, it will likely not work on most of them.”

“What?” Lucy stared at her. “No! That’s not…we came all this way to find that stupid book, and now you’re saying the spell won’t even work?”

Chloe looked at her impassively. “I am saying it may not work. It depends.”

“On what?” Nathan asked warily.

Chloe emerged from behind the desk. She moved to an armchair, sinking down on it with the grimoire in her lap, and tapped at the open pages. “It seems Kaboraz believed only specific nosferatu deserved a second chance at a human life. Thus, his spell was designed to reverse only vampires possessed of a certain ‘purity.
