Chapter Fourteen – Jenna
“All dressed and ready to go.” They were standing in the hallway of Angel and Ross’s house. The children were wrapped up in woolen hats and scarves, all they had to buy from Wolf Valley were some waterproof coats and footwear suitable for snow. The children were very excited about the prospect of snow.
“Can we have a snowball fight?” Laurel asked as they left the house.
“I expect so,” Jenna answered. “When we reach the cabin. Until then we have to keep our eyes and ears open.”
“For the bad men?” Laurel asked, her excitement about the snow evaporating as she was reminded of the real reason for their trip into the mountains.
“For the bad men.” Jenna hated to remind the young girl of the potential danger they were in. But they all needed to remain vigilant.
Angel drove her car around to the front of the house. The SUV Flint had rented would stay here tucked away in a barn until Angel returned. The plan for Ross to drive it miles away would at least put some distance between the children and the farmhouse.
A twinge of guilt struck Jenna and she rubbed her forehead to ease the tension building there. She understood Angel’s desire to help and even welcomed it. However, she didn’t relish the thought of this beautiful family, who lived an idyllic life here at the foot of the mountains, being dragged into this mess. Least of all, she didn’t ever want Danny to come to harm.
“Ready?” Flint asked.
“Ready.” Jenna snapped out of her daze and ushered the children to the car. “Hopefully this is the last car journey we have to take for a while.”
“Good, because I am tired of sitting in the car all day,” Thomas announced with one last wistful look at the play area.
“In a few hours, we’ll be up there.” Jenna pointed to the mountain peaks in the distance.
“At the top?” Thomas asked.
“No, not right at the top. It would take days to climb that high.” Jenna helped both children into the car and settled them in their seats.
“Where are you going to sit?” Laurel asked.
“In the back with you two. I’m going to sandwich myself between you both.” She gave them a smile and dropped her voice to say, “I have fresh cookies, we can share them later.”
“I love cookies,” Thomas told the world in a loud voice.
From the front seat, Angel laughed and said, “They are my best chocolate chip cookies.”
“Shall we say thank you to Angel?” Jenna said as she squeezed in between the two children.
“Thank you,” they chorused.
Flint packed the last of the luggage into the trunk and came around to the driver’s side, only to realize his mistake and head around the car to the passenger door.
“Don’t you like women drivers?” Angel asked as she put the car in drive, and they headed away from the farmhouse toward the road.
“I have no trouble with women drivers. I just like being in control.” He shrugged. “Old habits die
