Monique's snow gear fit her as snug as a glove and kept her far warmer than she would have guessed from looking at it. Though the cold wind bit at her cheeks and the tip of her nose, the brisk temperature was more invigorating than uncomfortable.

Ice-skating, on the other hand, was very uncomfortable. It looked so easy on TV, but balancing on two knife edges was more difficult that it looked. There were several members of the hotel staff on hand to help Monique get her balance, but their assistance only made her feel more inadequate and awkward than falling.

The other women had no difficulty swooping across the ice. She imagined most of them had lessons growing up and were as comfortable on blades as they were in high heels. Monique stifled a groan as one of the women zipped across the ice and leaped into a twisting spin before landing into a graceful glide once more.

The only thing that kept Monique on the ice was imagining how Rourke would feel if she slunk back to the room. He was brokering some important deals that would see his business successfully into the new year, and all she had to do was skate. Monique steeled herself for another attempt and stepped back out onto the ice.

She'd been skating for an hour before she finally felt like she was getting the hang of it. She didn't imagine she would ever be doing any leaps or figure eights, but she was more than capable of navigating a slow circle around the edge of the skating rink. She was slower than the other women, but it didn't matter to her. She was doing her best, and her best seemed to be good enough.

She waved at several of the women, and they waved back as they sailed by Monique. Their smiles encouraged her to keep at it. More than one of them shot her a quick thumbs-up as they skated past and Monique did not feel as if they were judging her with their eyes. She was going to do this. She was going to pull it off.

As her confidence grew, Monique speeded things up. She wanted to skate along with the other women, not be an obstacle for them to slip around. She pumped her arms and legs and accelerated. She rounded the first quarter with no trouble at all, leaning into it and extending her outside leg to keep her balance. She zipped past a pair of women, and they gave her a whooping cheer of approval. Monique grinned and kept up the pace, staying with the pack of skaters rather than being passed by them.

She felt good. She felt like she belonged. Everything was going to be okay. Even Mrs. DeBoer seemed impressed by how quickly she'd picked up the knack of zipping across the ice.
