Chapter 8

A week later Chalise was just arriving home after a long shift and ready to take her shoes off when the phone rang.

“Chalise honey, this is your mama and I need to talk to you. It’s about my man, Phil.” Chalise rolled her eyes and was glad her mama couldn’t see her through the phone.

“I’m worried about him. He smokes more than I do which is a lot. He’s also drinking more and that’s not like him. He doesn’t go out to see his buddies and drink cappuccino. Phil is different as you know, but he is usually a happy guy. Not now. I don’t get to wear my new clothes cuz he doesn’t want to take me out anymore. Your mama isn’t happy staying home all day. Did he say anything to you when you were here?”

“Mama, Phil doesn’t talk to me a lot. No, I have no idea what’s up with him. Maybe it’s all that garlic he likes to eat.”

“Honey, I finally got him out of the house today, but will you call him later. I know it doesn’t seem like it, but he respects you. That’s why he thought his buddy Sal would like you. That was a big thing for him to do, you know.” Now my eyes were rolling out of my head.

“I don’t know if he’ll say anything to me mama, but I’ll call him. Are you sure that he’ll be okay with that?”

“Chalise, I don’t care if he’s okay with it or not. You talk to him like you really care and see what you can do. I need him to be like himself again.”

I couldn’t help but wonder why she would want him to be like himself, but I kept that to myself.

“I’ll do it mama. I love you and don’t tell him that you talked to me.”

I said goodbye and wondered what I was going to say to this man. I wasn’t much of a shrink to begin with and this guy was about the last person that I had any understanding of. He’d probably say the same about me.

Later I picked up the phone and tried to think about what I would say. Hi Phil, I hear you’re depressed. Is it about your mama or were you abandoned at an early age. I was no Sigmund damn Freud, but I could be sweet if I really wanted to. Even with Phil. Okay, let’s get it over with.

“Mama, I’m calling to talk to Phil. Is he home?”

A few seconds and, “Hey Chalise, how’s tricks?” Oh god, how I hated this.

I forced a little small talk and then told him I noticed that he’d seemed a little down when I was there. “Phil, you’re one of my favorite people and I’m worried about you. What’s up?”

“There’s nothing wrong honey. I’m just not quite myself. I’ll be fine.” So he was taking the “I’m a man” stance.

“Phil, I know we’re different people but c’mon. Something isn’t right and I’m here to listen.
