Nine

Six months later, we both had money coming in. My romance novels were outselling his a hundred to one, but I tried to keep his spirits up. His writing was good, but I felt like he hadn't found his audience. In the meantime, the sales from my books had been collecting in my bank account. We decided to rent a house together and quickly fell in love with the third one we saw.

“I love this island in middle of the kitchen,” I said, running my hand over the granite countertop.

“Yeah?”

“Reminds me of growing up.”

“How so?”

“We had one in our house. I used to sit with my back against it and read my mom's romance novels.”

He smiled. “That's cute.”

“Cute or a little depressing. My parents fought a lot.”

I stopped stroking the granite and went over to the sink to turn the water on.

“Mine split when I was young. I grew up with my mom.”

“Did you read her romance novels?”

“No, but I read her science fiction books. Sounds like you were lucky.”

“Not really. Seeing my parents fight all the time, those romance books were my escape. I'd sit next to the island in the kitchen and read for hours.”

“Well, now you have an island again.”

“Just don't make me sad so I have to sit at it all the time, okay?”

I walked back over to him and put my arms around his waist.

“I promise. And on the bright side, all that reading is probably why you can spin a popular yarn.”

“Yeah, I read a lot of them until my father found out. He called them disgusting and worthless. When he burned a pile of them in the back yard, I was fourteen years old, unpopular at school, and heartbroken.”

“He literally burned the books?”

“He was a bit extreme. About a week later, I decided to sit down and write my own ending to the one I'd been reading before it got burned. I've always wondered about the end to that book.”

“Which one was it?”

“I don't remember. Something about a Prince and a secretary, but it was steamy and I loved the characters.”

Josh nodded then leaned forward and kissed me.

Our first night in the house, we ordered a pizza from Gino's, which was right around the corner. We sat on the wood floor in the living room, boxes piled around us, and enjoyed our first dinner together in the new place. The food and wine were great, but I really liked was the fact that I was finally going to be living with Josh in a house we had both picked together.

“I love this place,” I said after closing the pizza box and pushing it away.

“I love you.”

“You sound like a bad romance novel,” I said then smiled.

“One you wrote maybe.”

I leaped toward him and started tickling. We wrestled on the ground for a moment. Then he let me pin him. As he stared up at me while on his back on the wood floor, I bent down and kissed him. At the same time, I rubbed my body against him.
