CHAPTER SIX

Erick walked into the library and saw Lyla; she was busy with her computer and didn’t notice him walk to her desk.

“Hey babe,” he said with a smile.

“I remember telling you not to come to my work place and don’t call me babe.” She said as she continued typing.

“I promise to love you no matter what,” he said.

“Oh, yeah, you promise. Is this the sort of promise you made when you said that you would love me forever? Or, is it more like the promise that you made me when you said that you weren’t seeing, um, what was her name? Kristen? Yeah, that was her name.” She tapped her finger against her chin as if she was contemplating. “Or was it the other female? And what was her name? You know the one that Fiona and I caught you at the movies with? The one you swore you stopped seeing that night, only to be seen two weeks later by my collegue, of all people, at the mall with the same woman. Or could it be the promise that you made to me when you gave me that fake platinum engagement ring after asking me to marry you!”

His smile faltered. Only for a moment and then was back so fast that if Lyla hadn’t been paying attention, she would have probably missed it. “Baby I paid good money for that ring. I wanted you to have something nice.” He looked at Lyla’s left hand as if he thought that she would be a big enough fool to still be wearing the engagement ring of the jerk who called her, not came to see her in person, but called her to say that he was moving to New York. And "oh, by the way, the wedding. It’s off. Sorry".

“You still have it, don’t you? The ring?” He licked his lips, “Yeah baby, you still got it. You held onto it because I gave it to you.”

“I don’t have it.” She pretended not to have it.

“What, I gave it to you with love and you lost it. Did you throw it away?”

“None of your business, you left right?” she pretended not to care.

“Please don’t tell me you tossed it away,” he pleaded.

“I tossed it.” She finally said.

“You can’t do this to me; I loved you that’s why I bought you that ring,”

“If you loved me then you wouldn’t have left. So you measured how much you loved me with a ring?”

“No I didn’t mean it that way, what I meant was, I loved you and still love you and would appreciated if you had it on your finger.”

“Forget it, I’m past that.” She said firmly.

The nerve of him, thinking that she’d hold on to something just because he gave it to her. Um, well, she did still have it, but he didn’t need to know that. She didn’t want him to think that she’d held onto it out of some sort of sentiment, because she didn’t. The real reason that
