Stone had never been to the bar Gabriel had named. It was a tiny place on the far end of California Street, an area heâd never frequented much, and he suspected it might have popped up during the time he was away. It was one of those kinds of places youâd probably never see unless you were looking for it.
Kolinsky was already there when Stone arrived, seated in a dim alcove. The place was crowded but nobody got near the dragonâs table.
Stone slid in across from him. âThanks for showing up. Weâve got to find some new way of communicating. Gabrielâs getting tired of playing messenger, and I canât very well turn up at your shop anymore, unless youâve got out of the magic business and started selling high-end dresses.â
The dragonâs eyes narrowed. âI hope you do not plan to begin the habit of summoning me without a very good reason.â
Stone sighed. Dragons. Couldnât live with âem, couldnât drop-kick âem to another dimension. âI donât plan to summon you at all. I thought we were friends. Friends do have ways to contact each other, generally. But since you refuse to even enter the twentieth century, let alone the twenty-first, that leaves out most of the common methods, doesnât it?â He spread his hands. âLookâif nothing else, give me an address where I can send things. That way you can get to them on your own time, and I donât have to keep bothering your son.â
Kolinskyâs jaw tightened at the word son, but only for a second. âWhat do you want, Alastair?â
âI need to talk about something, and youâre the only one I can safely do it with.â
âSafely?â
âYesâwell, you or Madame Huan, and Iâve got no idea how to reach her.â
âI see.â The dragon sipped his drink. âWhat is this about?â
âAldwyn.â
He inclined his head as if he suspected that. âWhat about him? As I told you before, I cannot, and will not, involve myself in whatever affairs are between you. It is unfortunate, but it must remain so.â
âYes, I get that. Iâm not asking you to help me. Not directly, anyway. But I was hoping you might at least give me some advice.â
âRegarding what, specifically?â
The server appeared, and Stone ordered a Macallan. Guinness wasnât going to do the trick tonight. âI canât tell you everything, but heâs asked me to do anâ¦errand for him.â
Kolinskyâs expression hardened. âAn errand. You are hardly an errand boy, Alastair.â
âYes, well, thereâs a bit more to it than that. Please donât ask for details, but Iâm guessing youâre bright enough to work out at least some of them on your own.â
âHe has compelled you under an oath.â It wasnât a question. âProbably as a condition for returning your son to you when he had gone missing.â
One thing that was occasionally nice about dragons was that most of them were quicker on the uptake than most humans. It could be inconvenient when you didnât want them to figure something out, but useful when you did. âI can neither confirm nor deny that, and Iâm not sure what would happen to me if I tried.
