Chapter Five

“Ash!” Eve chased after her dragon-shifter, hating the desperation in her voice.

But he neither paused nor slowed. She circled down the winding stairs of the tower and almost missed him exiting the stairs. Her feet nearly slipped on the cool brick beneath her feet, but she caught the solid wall, steadied herself, and then hurried out the open doorway he’d exited through.

At the end of the hall, she caught sight of him just as he strode into a room, closing the door behind him.

Her thoughts spun as she hurried after him, her naked breasts bouncing almost uncomfortably. Her nipples were painfully hard, although she wasn’t sure whether it was due to the chill in the air, or the fact that just minutes before she’d been on her knees, sucking the large cock of her dragon-shifter.

Reaching the doorway, she turned the antique-looking brass handle and opened it. She took one step in before catching sight of the massive, plush room. A four-poster bed dominated one side of the room, while the other had a sitting area, a crackling fire, and what looked like a modern bathroom through an archway.

Ash was standing before the windows, fists clenched at his side.

“Ash?” she whispered, suddenly feeling unsure.

She might feel like she knew him. Like they’d been together in some strange lifetime in the past, but she still didn’t really know him.

Padding softly closer, she hesitated just behind him. For a second her heart seemed to skip a beat. He was so beautiful. Every muscle of his slightly golden skin so hard he could’ve been a statue. His short, dark hair messy and sexy as hell. She longed to touch him, to feel that connection to him again.

But he may never let me touch him again, if I can’t get him to understand.

“Is it really so unreasonable that I’m scared to leave behind everything I’ve ever known for someone I’ve only met twice?” Her voice wavered. “To leave behind my little sister? I mean, she needs me.”

He turned slowly, his expression gentler than before. “I told you. We’ve already had lifetime after lifetime together. I’m not a stranger to you.”

She nibbled her lip, afraid to question him, but needing to, if she ever hoped to fully trust him. “How is that possible?”

Slowly, he brushed her dark hair back from her face, tucking it behind one ear. “Do you know why the dragons came?”

She shook her head.

“We dragons are reborn every time we die. Dragons do not always choose the same lover as the life before, but there are certain qualities in a mate that we sense, on an instinctual, magic level. So every dragon ends up with a mate well-suited for them.

And then there are rare dragons, like me and you, who choose the same dragon every lifetime.
