Chapter Sixteen

I’m right behind Spark as she dodges lifeless brambles, sidles between tightly knit tree trunks, and leaps over fallen branches. The swiftness of her movement and my keen attention on the path under her feet catches me off guard when I jump the branches and land in a field of sunshine on the other side. I skid to a stop and almost fall over Spark. She looks unsurprised.

Squeezing my eyes shut and reopening them, nothing changes. I turn briskly and try to find the world I just left. But the portal isn’t there. I shake my head to clear it and try to remember the last thing that happened before I jumped the log and arrived in this field of sunshine and yesterday’s dreams. It was stupid, but I was amusing myself with Spark’s over-the-shoulder remark about my skill in pleasuring her, but that swiftly dissolved the second I sensed early morning sunlight on my face.

It feels glorious.

I recognize sounds and sensations I haven’t heard or felt in years. Birds sing, squirrels scurry, and leaves rustle in a warm breeze. The smell of grass is sweet. I look up, and can’t break the stare even with my eyes watering from the sun. A cloud floats a respite long enough for me to stop blinking. I reach up to wipe tears from my face and marvel that it comes off wet instead of frozen.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Spark says. “It always amazes me. I usually don’t want to leave.”

Awe turns to anger and I reach out, grab her hand, and whirl her around. “Where the hell are we?”

I can’t stop my eyes from wandering. I can’t concentrate with all the shades of green everywhere I look. I smell Earth, hear the soft swish of grass against my cold weather gear, and feel the buoyant three feet high field grass I’m smashing under my boots. All those thoughts, feeling, and memories mingle with the warmth of sunshine on my cheeks. It’s breathless.

I pull off my cap, gloves, and coat while my anger builds. Spark studies me closely as she does the same.

“No questions, Alistair,” she softly says, dropping her winter wear on the grass beside her. “You have to wait until the others get here.”

Her slim body, firm round breasts, small waist, softly curved hips, thin neck, and amazingly beautiful hair, eyes, and lips take my breath away. She’s beautiful. And suddenly I want to remove the rest of her clothes, and mine too, feel her skin against mine.

The thought of my taunting sexual advances stirred something in me. Shame, desire, and a need to protect that I wasn’t ready to accept.

“You tricked me! I bet everything you’ve told me has been lies,” I said, hiding the real feelings growing in me. “This place is not in this kingdom! You’ve pulled me through a portal, or dragged me in to an enchantment! Are your witchy friends going to come out of the shadows and take me prisoner? How about Humphrey? Is he
