Pearl grabbed his hand squeezed. “Lance. Lance, look at me. Open your eyes.”

The morning sun started to stream through the kitchen window as blood pooled on the worn linoleum underneath Lance.

Think, Pearl, think. He’d been shot in the shoulder. She slipped her hand underneath him and felt for an exit wound. A sticky patch indicated that the bullet had gone through. Pressure. She needed to apply pressure to the wound. She grabbed the pistol from beside Leila as she hurried to the pantry and stashed it on the top shelf, before snatching the rarely used first aid kit from behind the sack of potatoes. Flipping through it, she found clean gauze pads and pressed a bundle of them on the front wound, watching for the blood flow to slow down. When it did, she rolled him over and taped another gauze pad on the back before laying him on his back again.

“Lance. Hey, baby, wake up.” She slapped his cheeks until he moaned. “You’re going to be okay. It’s an in and out, no major arteries touched on the way.”

Leila rolled over and groaned and Pearl debated hitting her again to pay her back for the last twenty-four hours. Instead, she went to the laundry and pulled out a box of ropes and tie down straps. She hurried back into the kitchen and grabbed Leila’s hands, pulling them behind her back and strapping them tight to her body. “You’re not going anywhere just yet.”

Leila rolled over on her stomach and sobbed.

Pearl picked up the phone, dialled a number she knew by heart and waited until the call connected. “Jeff. Someone broke into the house. Long story but Lance has been shot. I need your help. Please, please come.”

A sob hiccupped up her throat as Pearl slid down the wall to curl up in a heap on the floor. She shook with nerves as the tears burned down her cheeks.

She didn’t move until Jeff and Billie ran up the back steps a short time later and burst into the kitchen. She shot up off the floor, ducked around the unconscious woman and rushed into their arms.

Jeff passed her off to Billie and hurried to check Lance who was trying to sit. “You okay, mate?”

“Yeah.” He held his shoulder and paled. “Help me up.”

Pearl turned her face away from him, hating her weakness. If anything, she’d wanted to prove how capable she was without him, not turn into an emotional wreck.

“Ssh, it’s okay now. We’ve got you.” Billie stroked her hair and held her tight until she calmed down.

Pearl never lost it like this. “Sorry.” She wiped her hands over her face and sniffed, avoiding glancing at Lance. “This is so not me.” She tried to laugh but it came off a strangled sob.

Billie grabbed a box of tissues off the counter and pulled out a couple, jamming them into Pearl’s hand. “You’ve never been attacked in your house before either. Nor have you been pregnant and that alone will be messing with your hormones.
