Chapter 9

Sofia glanced through the window to the villa's back garden and smothered a smile at the sight of her husband lying on his back, a toddler on his chest.

Alexi's friend Demetri and his wife Ria had brought their son over for them to babysit while the other couple enjoyed a romantic lunch out. Yiannis was only two years old but he had the ability to wrap around his little finger a two hundred pound man with a will of iron.

Imagining what Alexi would be like with children of his own sent a wave of heat rushing through Sofia's body. She tapped on the window and gave them both a wave.

Alexi waved back, then his hand was captured by the miniature General and forced behind his head in an I surrender fashion. They both looked as though they would hate the moment when Demetri and Ria returned and said it's time to go home.

Sofia glanced at the list she held in her hand, and frowned at all she still had to do. So far, since they were married, they'd done little of the entertaining Alexi normally did. They had only wanted to spend time together, to get to know each other before the rest of the world intruded. But the time of keeping the world at bay was coming to an end.

Thank God, Alexi had a staff to help create the dinners, parties and days out on his private yacht. The yacht was what Sofia had enjoyed the most during the weeks of their honeymoon. She had loved lying on the bow next to her husband with the blue Aegean Sea sparkling around them, encircling her and Alexi in a ring of joy that nothing and no one could penetrate or ruin.

It made her feel safe.

But was anyone truly safe? Was she fooling herself with Alexi's reassurances? The nausea she'd experienced the night before and again this morning boiled up from the pit of her stomach. She fought it back and tried to disperse the uncertainties she had regarding Alexi. She had to simply trust him, with her mind as well as her heart.

He might not profess his love in flowery words, but since the day she became his wife he had shown her how he felt in a hundred different ways. The ordering of roses to greet her at breakfast, the pearl necklace he had imported for her from the Caribbean, the drawing of her bath and putting bubbles in it, then joining her in the tub with two glasses of champagne.

What her grandfather and Pagonis had said was false. She wasn't fooling herself just because she was happy. The joy she and Alexi shared was real.

Natalie, their maid, tapped on the door and told her lunch was ready in the garden. The thought of food made her stomach queasy, but she had to eat something. She'd had eaten nothing since the party the night before, and then all she'd had was a little taramasalata spread on crackers.

Carp roe was delicious but it didn't make a meal.
