‘Philippa? It’s Loraine Latimer. Is my son with you? I can’t reach him on his cellphone.’ She sounded hassled.

‘I’ll get him,’ I said.

Jack gave me a haunted look.

‘It’s your mother,’ I told him.

He looked irritated as he took the phone from my hand. ‘Loraine? What’s wrong?’

He didn’t speak much after that, and when he did his voice was soothing. ‘Come on, you’re over-reacting ... Well, not till tomorrow ... Okay, okay, I’ll come today.’ He glanced over his shoulder and caught me staring, then turned away. ‘Listen, Loraine, chill out, you’re doing yourself no good. Pour yourself a whisky, d’you hear me? Okay, see you later.’

‘What was that about?’ I asked when he returned to the kitchen. There was no point pretending I hadn’t been listening.

‘I’m not sure.’ Jack sat down at the table. ‘Loraine’s almost hysterical. Over a bloody break-in.’

‘At your house?’

‘No. At Kirsten’s flat.’

‘What was stolen?’

‘Loraine didn’t seem to know. But for some reason it’s upset the hell out of her.’

‘Is that why she wants you to go home?’

‘Yeah.’ He got up and paced round the kitchen, then sat down again, rubbing his face in his hands. After a minute he looked at me and shook his head. ‘Kirsten’s murdered and Loraine takes it on the chin. I’m hassled by some lunatic who gets off on smashing antiques and splashing blood on cars, and Loraine acts like she’s been taken to a bad movie. Then Kirsten’s flat is trashed and she falls apart. I don’t understand her, and I don’t think I ever will.’

I stared at him. ‘Perhaps there’s something else. Something she doesn’t want to discuss on the phone.’

‘Like what?’

‘God knows. You’d better get home and find out.

‘That’s the other thing. She wants you to come with me, Philippa.’
