Chapter Twelve
"Oh my god. Will you go away!" Ruby grunted in frustration and tossed her phone on the couch. For three days she had been getting texts and calls from Patrick begging and pleading for her to respond so they could talk. Ruby was half mad by now, twitching every time her phone went off, unsure of every unknown number. If they didn't leave a message she assumed it was Patrick and when they left a message, she assumed it was Patrick.
Ruby threw herself into her retail job in which a trained monkey could probably handle but she also sought out volunteer work. The library had more volunteers than there were books needing to be shelved but they put her on a list if ever a spot opened up. The soup kitchen welcomed her by handing her a sponge and some gloves and asking if she could get started right away. Ruby felt at home as she scrubbed pans and chatted with the other volunteers. She even got some good leads on other charities that needed help. One was a place that built houses that she would probably pass on, construction wasn't her thing, but she thought of Nix and wondered if he might like something like that.
All in all, life in Asheville wasn't so bad.
A notification of a new voice mail from Patrick popped up on her phone.
And if she could just get her old life to leave her alone, life would be splendid.
Ruby deleted the message without listening to it. Hearing his voice only dredged up memories she wished to remain forgotten.
She had her feet up on her coffee table. They were screaming after being worked hard the last few weeks. It seemed that her job and her volunteer jobs didn't believe in the use of chairs. She was going to be in the market for a new pair of sneakers real quick.
The knock at her door was unwelcome. But since only two people had ever knocked on her door, the prospect of her visitor was a good one. If it was Taylor, then she was in for a good old fashion bitch fest. But Taylor hadn't mentioned any trips through her area. If it was Nix, then she was going to tie him up and make him talk. The man was avoiding her. She rarely saw him and when she did, it was of the back of his head as he slipped away. Yes, he had come to her door with a fish in need of care but she felt that she was a last resort in that situation. Ruby didn't want to be a last resort.
Not that she knew what exactly she wanted to be in terms of Nix. They were complicated. She had feelings for him and was attracted to him. One could even go as far as saying she had a crush on him. But when it was a friend and you just got out of a serious, apparently not as committed as she
