CHAPTER 18
Death wasnât easy, but it didnât last. Her last thoughts were of regret, longing, and sadness. She had ruined everything. Lost everything. Died.
What was I thinking, running off alone? I promised Torian I would never leave him, yet here I am, she thought. Where is that, though? Is this⦠the afterlife? Heaven is supposed to be beautiful, peaceful, and light. I guess I didnât deserve that. Itâs dark, cold, and empty here. Nothing but my thoughts. So is this hell? Alone with my guilt for eternity. That would suck. Ugh. Can I at least go to sleep? Can I rest in peace? Maybe I should try.
A thudding sound filled her ears.
Do I still have ears to hear with?
Something weighed her body down. It covered her. It filled her mouth.
How can I feel, if I have no body?
A cough escaped her lips, expelling what tasted like dirt, but more came pouring back in.
I can taste dirt. Iâm not dead.
Her senses sharpened. Instead of dull, numbing sensations, everything was vibrant. Pain stabbed through her body as it woke up and struggled to move or see. Dirt sifted through her eyelashes and scratched her eyes, and she realized what was happening.
Someone is burying me, and not in a casket.
Panic filled her throat.
Iâm not dead, but Iâm going to be soon if I donât get out of this.
She tried to calm her mind and use telekinesis to push out of the ground, but nothing happened.
The procedure mustâve worked. Iâm powerless.
Cold, grainy earth enveloped her. Sharp rocks scratched at her bare skin.
They took my flight suit. No hope for oxygen or a mask then.
She shifted her body around to try and loosen the soil around her, but it kept packing down tighter.
Theyâre still up there, burying me even deeper.
Madi raised her legs to create room to move and pushed her arms up over her head to make a small air pocket.
I donât have much time before I run out of oxygen, but I have to wait until theyâre done.
She knew if she tried to escape with the enemy still above ground, theyâd just kill her on the spot and bury her again.
Iâm too weak to fight them.
Her head still reeled from the TEAR serum, but she knew that dizzy feeling was from a lack of oxygen. The thudding of dirt still continued above her.
I canât take much more weight either.
It seemed like an eternity, but she held out hope. Eventually, there was no more sound, and no more pounding feeling from her burial. She waited as long as she could after that, just to be safe. Then she turned her head to the side, took a quick breath of stale air, and started forcing her hands up into the earth. She kept her eyes and mouth sealed shut as she pulled fistfuls of dirt down and tried to force it down beneath her legs.
