Chapter Twenty-Nine
17.54 CDT
Itâs good to make progress, to feel the mountain disappearing under our feet. The trees start thinning the higher up we go and thereâs a change in the air too, how it makes my head go lighter.
Leda keeps darting ahead of us or disappearing under bushes, chasing critters.
âSo, you were really fine with it, not going to school growing up?â I ask.
âWeâre still talking about me?â
âWeâre not nearly done.â
âFI,â he whispers.
âIâm just getting to know you. Itâs what people do.â
âRight.â
âSo, tell me, Iâm interested. It must have been weird, having your dad as your school. Not going to classes with kids your age and stuff.â
âIt was all I knew,â he says. âAnd Dad said I was lucky. That by travelling, I was seeing the world for real, not just in books. He said that I was going to âThe School of Lifeâ.â He puts on a grand voice. âI guess I believed him.â
I realise thatâs what I havenât been able to put my finger on â that weird contradiction in Christopher, how part of him seems totally wise about the big world stuff, how calm he is, how he seems to let things float off him, stuff that rubs the rest of us up the wrong way, but how heâs totally clueless at the same time. Because, I guess heâs never had the chance to be a kid. To make friends. To have a crush on a girl and ask her out and then break up. All that mindless shit that takes up every waking minute of most of a kidâs life growing up.
And for a second, I kind of envy him.
âThatâs allowed â travelling around rather than going to class?â I ask.
âDad had to prove that I was following a curriculum, covering the basics â but as long as that was in place, it was fine.â
âAnd did it work? Your Dadâs philosophy? Do you understand life?â
âWhat? You canât feel the deep wisdom radiating off me?â
âYeah, I can, actually.â I pause. âItâs justââ
âItâs not enough, right? Thatâs what youâre thinking.â
âNoââ
âI mean, whatâs the point in learning to meditate with Tibetan monks if you canât even talk to a girl.â
âYou are talking to a girl.â
âUnder duress.â
âReally?â
âNo. Not anymore.â
âNot anymore?â
âItâs hard for me â at first. To make small talk. To walk up to someone and start a conversation.â
His shoulders slump and his pace slows, like his thoughts are weighing him down.
âWas it hard starting school, after all that time?â
He nods but doesnât look up.
âA boysâ boarding school, you said?â
He nods again.
âIâve heard those can be rough. Dad went to one here in the States. Heâs still scarred by the experience.â
âItâs not that bad. They leave me alone, mostly. Iâm lucky I joined in the sixth form; everyoneâs grown up a bit by then. We get our own rooms. And if you do your work the teachers leave you alone too.â
âSo, you havenât made any friends then?â
âIâm not sure.â
âWhat do you mean, youâre not sure?â
âI sit next to people in class.
