Chapter Nineteen

A few days later

I've just wrapped up classes when I spot Juno in the distance, her strawberry blonde curls piled into a messy bun. She's wearing a flowy, floral dress that accentuates her curves, and her face lights up as we fall into step together. Her style is effortlessly chic, and her smile alone could brighten even the cloudiest day. She has this magnetic energy, and I feel drawn to her, as if she's the embodiment of all things good and wholesome.

“Hey, how's the new place?” I ask.

“It's great,” she answers, grinning. “You know those cute little bungalows the campus owns at the bottom of the hill? It’s one of those. It’s got four bedrooms, but so far I only have one roomie,” she explains. “Grace. She’s another sorority dropout.”

“Oh? What sorority was she rushing?”

“Delta Kappa Zeta. It’s the African American sorority,” she explains.

“Oh, I didn’t know about them,” I answer. She must see the confusion on my face because she clarifies for me.

“Yeah, most black women weren’t allowed to join early sororities because of racist shit. So, places like Delta Kappa Zeta were created.”

“Huh, that’s cool. But, did she have the same kind of problems there?”

“No, Grace just decided she couldn’t juggle being a freshman and a part time job and her studies and the sorority. She’s got a kickass scholarship, and she had to drop it to put her studies first.”

“Makes sense.” I nod.

“Yeah, she’s really nice. You guys would get along great. Anyway, we’re calling our house 'Reject U' since we’re both sorority rejects.”

“That's funny.” I smile back at her. I fill her in on the Baywatch-style rescue, complete with exaggerated arm movements and a dramatic retelling of the moment when Apollo dove into the water to save someone.

Juno bursts out laughing too. “Man, I wish I saw that! Too bad Beta Phi Chi is so bitchy, present company excluded, of course.” She lifts her eyebrows and looks over at me.

“Of course.” I smile. “Not that I’m one of them yet anyway.” I don’t tell her how much I’m doubting that I ever will be. Even if I get in, I can’t imagine the sorority house ever feeling like my home.

“Olympus House is so much more fun. Like, they’ve managed to be the most respected frat practically anywhere, and they don’t act like douches about it. Corinna watched way too much Mean Girls or something.” She rolls her eyes.

“Yeah, and decided Regina George was the hero,” I agree.

“Seems like it.” Juno nods. As we walk, Juno playfully nudges my shoulder. “If your sorority rejects you, come live at Reject U.” She gives a wink. “Good slogan, right? We should put it on a shirt or something.”

I can't help but laugh, but I also realize how much I've missed Juno. We haven't seen much of each other since the party, and with our different shifts at the coffee shop, it's been tough to find time together. Even chatting like this, out in public, feels risky.

My thoughts drift to Apollo, and a warmth spreads through me at the mere thought of his touch.
