Chapter 8

Sheppard sat in the outer office trying to figure out what he was doing here. On top of being out of work, he had no idea how he was going to afford to put his daughter in preschool should he find a job, and then get a car to get him back and forth to this job. Then there was the added issue of Carol.

He’d never liked her, not even as a child. The few times that his mom had dropped them off with her, usually for a week to a month at a time, she was cruel, heavy handed, and nasty. When he’d found out that she had Mandy, he tried to find out what he could do about having her sent to his grandma. Over a period of about three months all he got was that they were working on it. Or that someone was trying to figure out the circumstances as to why she’d have to leave her aunt’s home.

Then out of the blue just before Christmas he was brought into another office much like this one and asked if he needed to get home. He nearly sobbed when they told him what they knew about his home situation.

“Your grandma needs you at home. And I’m to tell you that she has Mandy as of now.” He nodded to his sergeant and asked him how that had come about. “I guess your aunt just put her on a plane one day and said to the staff there that they were to take care of her. No money, no food, and barely enough clothing to survive the cold weather in Ohio. She’s a real piece of work, that aunt of yours. By the way, I have already taken care that the money you were sending there has been moved to your grandmother’s accounts, and we also took the funds that were allocated for this month back from Ms. Lewis. I have to admit, I didn’t have to do that, but after having a long conversation with a few people on your end, it was a great pleasure. I only wish I could have been there when she found out.”

“She’s going to have a shitfit.” Sergeant Williams just smiled. “I petitioned to have the funding stopped weeks ago, and they told me it would take months if not years to complete. Something about proof of guardianship.”

“Yes, well, you have very influential friends, as I said. The president called me direct and said that he wanted it done yesterday. And within an hour, it was finished. Also, he said that any man who has his family at home hurting the way that yours is should be able to go and help them in their time of need. He has mustered you out as well.”

Before he left he’d been handed a thick envelope that not only had enough cash in it to feed and clothe himself for the next few weeks, but a ticket to get home, as well as information about a car that would pick him up when he landed.
