Chapter Ten

“You’re in a faraway place,” Anouska said.

“Sorry.” Elijah realized he’d been staring into space for several minutes.

The afternoon with Daniel was all he could think about. He would still be in bed with him now if Daniel wasn’t so committed to his show. He knew what it was like for a performer—the last thing needed before a big performance was distraction. But what a distraction it had been.

They were in Cafe24 for a light snack ahead of the show. Anouska had the evening off. She’d been entertaining a kids’ party all afternoon and didn’t have to work again until Saturday’s finale. She told Elijah she wanted to check out Daniel’s show before going to bed early.

“What’s the matter?” she asked. “Is this a come-down after your success last night?”

“No. It’s nothing.” He shrugged, trying to keep it light. He wasn’t ready to spill on what he’d been up to. Not so soon after Vladislav. Being with Daniel was one hundred percent different, one hundred percent better, but no one else would see that. They’d just see a big old tramp working his through the company cuties.

“It looks like something,” Anouska said, tucking into a huge plate of pasta in cream sauce with lashings of cheese. With no show to prepare for, she was treating herself to a carb overload.

Elijah toyed with a small selection of cured meats and olives. His date with Daniel was still on and he didn’t want to spoil his appetite. He planned to watch the first show, then shower and change in the interval before catching the second act. The set list would be the same for both, but he didn’t care. He wouldn’t miss the opportunity of seeing him live.

“You should hear some of the things being said about Daniel backstage,” Anouska said, wiping her mouth with a napkin.

His eyes narrowed. “By who?”

“Oliver Gill. Apparently, Daniel and he used to know each other. A long time ago. Oliver can’t stand him.”

“Oliver is a vicious little shit.” Elijah hardly knew him but he sounded like a prize dick. That cack-handed pass he’d made in the dressing room had not endeared him and now he bad-mouthing Daniel to anyone who’d listen. “They scarcely know each other. Oliver lost a couple of jobs to Daniel years ago and still holds a grudge. Whatever he says has been blown out of all proportion.”

“I know that,” Anouska said. “He’s been a trumped-up diva from the minute he came on board. I don’t think we’ll be seeing much of him after the cruise. He’s pissed off far too many people. I get the impression that Helen wants rid of him.”

“I only met him yesterday but he seems wildly erratic.”

“I feel a bit sorry for him,” she admitted. “He’s a troubled spirit. He can only cope by lashing out. Even when someone tries being nice to him, he fights it. It’s instinct. Like animal survival.”

“He needs help then,” Elijah said.

“Sure, he does. But he’ll never ask for it. I doubt he realizes that he does it.
