Chapter 17

In the morning, I woke to Annie at my side, sleeping face down. Her red hair spilled across her serene face. I watched her, watched the beauty of her, watched her heavy, measured breaths, and wondered if Rick had been treated to this side of her.

I wondered about him. He wasn’t ready to settle down, but would he one day? Would Annie be the one to turn him? If anyone could, she’d be the one. How had Annie written it—she was more than just tits and ass to him. I thought it was a throw away line at the time. But was it?

I crept out of bed. Annie stirred, muttered something in her sleep, but didn’t get up. I wanted to go right for her study, in search of the diary, but didn’t. Annie could be getting up right after me. Instead, I went downstairs and started the coffee. It was 6:45 in the morning. 3:45 to Annie. She wouldn’t be getting up for awhile.

Still, I waited a half hour before creeping back upstairs and sneaking into her study. There, sitting like a treasure on display in the center of her desk, was a new, blue diary. She hadn’t even bothered to lock it up.

I took a shaky breath as I touched the leather, half expecting it to burn. My ears were open, listening for the sound of Annie moving down the hall.

Nothing.

I flipped to her most recent entry, written last night, held my breath, and started reading.
