Chapter 8

The house was empty when Jim got home, all the windows dark. The boss had let everyone go 15 minutes early today. And since it was Annie’s day to pick up the kids from the babysitter, that meant she wouldn’t be home for almost an hour. Perfect. That would give him just enough time.

He parked his pickup in the driveway, then went inside. He tossed his keys on the kitchen table as he walked past and headed toward the garage. The fluorescent overhead lights buzzed and flickered to life, pushing back the darkness in the tangle of disarray that Jim called his shop.

The bluish light revealed thick-topped benches along two of the walls, with a large table saw dominating the center of the room. A shop-built router table on locking casters was parked in one corner, right next to an oscillating spindle sander. Every inch of wall space was covered by pegboard, home to a dizzying array of hand tools, everything from combination squares to mortise chisels to dovetail saws.

A welded steel lumber rack on one side held a mismatched assortment of hardwood scraps, carted home from the job site because they were too precious to go to the landfill, while a shelf at the front held Jim’s most prized possession: a fully restored set of Stanley bench planes, numbers three through seven.

A large mound of cutoffs littered the floor beneath the chop saw, and a thick layer of sawdust blanketed everything in sight. The state of his workshop had been a matter of contention between Annie and him as long as he could remember. She was always after him to clean it up. He was always too busy. Maybe next weekend... But right now, he was on a mission.

Jim walked around the table saw, stepping over the little chunks of wood on the floor, and stopped in front of a large rectangular object leaning against the wall. Tall and narrow, it was covered against the dust by a stained and threadbare old blanket. With a smile, he pulled the blanket aside to reveal the two new closet doors he had brought home yesterday.

“Awesome!” he grinned to himself. He bent and picked up the first door, then gingerly made his way through the cluttered shop and into the house.

A helper would’ve been handy. It was no easy task maneuvering the long doors up the stairs and into the master bedroom, but this wasn’t the first time Jim had done a job like this, so he just set his jaw and got it done. 15 minutes later, he had both doors lying on the bed.

He had measured them last night, so he knew that the new doors were the same height as the old. If you looked past the one-way mirrors and the expensive oak frames, they were virtually identical. Hanging the doors was going to be a snap. The metal rail along the top of the door opening was already installed, after all. Jim simply unscrewed the guide on the floor and lifted the old doors out of the track.
