Adam also came home tired and frustrated. Beth had an open house event at school, so she wasn't there to talk to. Adam lived in a small house that used to belong to his parents. It was a two bedroom, one and a half bath that his parents bought when they retired. Then his mom wanted to have all the kids over for dinners and holidays, and she thought about babysitting grandbabies, and they bought a bigger place. Adam took over the mortgage payments for the little house.

The kitchen in the little house rarely got used, except as a stopping point on the way out back to the barbeque grill. Tonight Adam was making frozen pizza in the oven. He considered that cooking. He ate his pizza and found a ballgame on television. Part way through he realized that he was watching the game with his jaw rigid and his forehead wrinkled and was yelling at the screen more than usual. This killer really had him in a foul mood. He'd gotten so frustrated by all the close calls. He shook his face out and rubbed his temples with his fingers. He didn't want to be grouchy at Beth if she came over. She wasn't planning on coming over tonight, but when they talked she could tell how upset he was and said she might get done in time to visit him.

Beth came over about eight thirty, just when Adam was thinking about going for a run to get his frustrations out.

“You weren’t going to come tonight.” Adam grasped her shoulders and kissed her.

“I could tell you sounded stressed on the phone. I thought maybe I could help.” She caressed his face. “It’s the case, isn’t it?”

They walked into the family room and sunk into the overstuffed couch.

“I’ve never been on anything this big and important before, and multiple murders just make it more complex.” He leaned his head on her shoulder and she combed her fingers through his hair.

“You knew this promotion was a big step. They trust you to be capable of it, you should trust yourself.”

He rolled his head up and looked into her eyes. “If we don’t solve this quick people will think it was a mistake, putting me in homicide so young.”

“You deserve to be there. Graduating early and finishing college while on patrol got you ahead young. And after getting the highest score ever on the detective’s exam, it’s reasonable they would put you in homicide. You’re so smart, Adam, if anyone can solve this you can.”

Adam was holding her hand and idly playing with her fingers. “They wanted some young people to come in and shake up the division. I know I can do it; it’s just eating up my brain right now.

Beth tilted his face up and kissed him. “Then we need to put your mind on something else.”

Adam gave her a sexy smile. “Like what else?”

Beth straddled his lap and dug her fingers into his hair. “Like this.” She kept kissing him until he forgot all about the case.
