Chapter 5
Lilly woke to an empty bed. Where was Jeffrey? She smelled bacon frying and knew. She stretched like a cat, feeling the hypersensitivity of her nipples, the delicious soreness between her legs, her swollen mouth; the body of a woman whoâd been thoroughly bedded. For the first time in her life she felt somehow free and utterly happy.
She recalled him saying, âNever change.â She wasnât certain why heâd said it. But the whole night seemed surreal to her. She recalled the stroke of midnight and the strange attack on her throat. It still was a little sore. Could it possibly be she was the Songbird? Did she dare hope?
She stood, pulled the sheet around her, and sat on the edge of the bed. Her insides cringed with uncertainty. What if she didnât have her voice? She had to find out. She forced herself to cough, then cleared her throat.
A sound! Guttural, scratchy, but a sound! She had made a noise for the first time in her long life of silence. She couldnât believe her good fortune. Sheâd discovered a man who found her desirable, and not just any man, but Demetri Braun, and she could actually make sounds. She couldnât help but feel sorry for Rose, and a little guilty about having the gift bestowed on her.
Her throat felt different, she realized, open somehow, like ropes had been loosened from her vocal cords. She began to tremble all over as she tried to say Jeffreyâs name.
It was garbled, hardly more than a squawk, but it was the best sound sheâd ever heard in her life. She tried again, carefully forming the words with her lips and tongue. When she could finally whisper his name, she jumped for joy and hopped around the room.
âYouâre up and looking happy. Whatâs up with you?â
At the sound of his voice she froze and watched him carry in a tray of scrambled eggs, bacon, English muffins, coffee. He wore a robe that exposed a long wide V down the front of his chest, revealing the thatch of brown hair there. His short hair was mussed from their lovemaking, his bangs falling in his eyes, and he was looking at her as if she were the most perfect woman in the world. He looked sexier than any man sheâd ever seen in her life and she felt her body responding to the sight of him.
He grinned at her as he laid the tray on the bedside stand, then he pulled her into his arms and said, âI liked the dancing. Youâve brought a light into this place. Promise me youâll never change.â He gazed steadily into her eyes as if he were giving her a directive.
Should she tell him? Could she even get out the words? Sheâd wait until she could form the words better and didnât have to whisper. She wanted to impress him. She rose up on tip toes, captured his mouth, and kissed him.
When she pulled back, he grinned back at her, a lopsided grin.
