Chapter Twelve
The house Max lived in sat about a mile from the State museum and the Circle, both near the center point of Indianapolis. After we ditched the car in a garage connected to the museum, Theo and I took to the sidewalks on foot and headed to Max’s home. A misty rain continued to fall and sprinkle the pools of water in the streets. Because it rained so much, the drains had trouble keeping up. Times when we had over a week of precipitation caused the White River to overflow and the streets to flood.
Carrying the heavy bag with the weapons over my shoulder, we jogged close to buildings. I scanned for cars, heartbeats, voices, and any footsteps. The few vehicles I’d heard were closer to the Circle. Those living and breathing were in the large glass hotel, now an apartment complex, or behind bricked buildings. Not a single light shined in the area, not that I needed any with my enhanced vision. Theo said he could see fair enough since the concrete under his feet had a lighter shade compared to the road and the muddy grass. I sensed he had trouble seeing when he’d grab hold of my arm every now and then.
I slowed my pace as we reached the sidewalk leading to Max’s neighborhood. Theo’s heart sounded louder than his footsteps. Although he had longer legs than I did, he still had difficulty keeping up with me.
“Which one is it?” he asked.
I pointed. “The second to last one on the end.”
There were a total of six two-leveled homes with high triangular roofs on one side of the street. They all faced a tall wood fence with brick buildings on the other side. The entrance to an interstate was within two blocks, and a huge stadium sat three blocks away. While all the homes had concrete steps leading to the front porches and small yards, none of them had garages. There were a few idle cars parked between the properties. Boards or bars covered the windows.
Not hearing a single heartbeat nearby, besides Theo’s, I assumed vampires called the area their home. Most of the houses and businesses within a mile of the Circle had basements and tunnels, so it made sense for vampires to reside around here.
“Think he’ll be home?” Theo asked.
“I doubt it. He usually shows up within an hour before sunrise, but we’ll be safe in his place.”
I’d stayed at Max’s house a few times, and Theo knew this. After we’d moved to Indianapolis, there were times I felt lonely. The quality of datable men wasn’t exactly the greatest. I wasn’t looking for a relationship anyway, but sometimes I needed companionship. I had an itch to scratch, and Max didn’t mind helping.
Nearing the large multi-leveled house, Theo twisted and gazed up at the dark sky. “Think we were followed?”
“No, I would’ve heard their heartbeat or felt the shift in the air from their wings.” Unless they were higher up. My exceptional hearing and sight only went so far.
