The first shot of tequila burns my chest. The models haven’t come out yet but the DJ’s spinning all the best trap shit. On the way over, I basically sat in the corner of the Uber and stared out the window for the full fifteen-minute ride. Derrick didn’t say anything either but he kept rubbernecking to see if I’d crack and actually tell him what that necklace means. He was probably wondering what was going through my head. That maybe I was deep in thought about what happened at my apartment. What I was really thinking about was what kind of tequila they had at the bar. I’m usually a sip-a-glass-of-wine-for-the-whole-night type of girl, but I need something to fix my mood tonight and sipping slow isn’t going to cut it.

Once we got here, I beelined to the bar and now I’m ready for my second shot.

“Are we gonna talk about this?”

“There’s nothing to talk about.” I hand Derrick a shot, tap his glass and bottoms-up again. “Let’s just enjoy the show.”

Six rows of chairs are spread on either side of a bright blue carpet. Most people are gathered in small friend groups around high tables that are littered around the perimeter of the room. I order a mixed drink and we manage to find an empty high table.

“It’s your mom, right? She bought you that necklace. That’s why you’re tripping out?”

Maybe if I sip this drink slowly, he’ll get the point. Or maybe I should throw it at him. Extreme thought, Coi, extreme thought.

“Okay, I get it. My bad. But how could I have known?”

Maybe if I down this whole drink, he’ll shut up. Actually, I have a better idea. I walk to his side of the table, grab his chin and splash our lips together.

“It’s all good, D. I’ve already forgotten about it.” Derrick leans in for another kiss and I wrap my arms around his neck and let him have it. Boys are so easy. “You ready for another shot now?”

We take two more shots and I down a mixed drink before the show is about to start. We’re sitting at the edge of the back row now, and I have some kind of tequila mixed drink in my hand. I’m feeling a little wavy but the room isn’t spinning so I must still be good. When the first model hits the stage, I start clapping.

“Wooo, work it girl.”

Derrick looks at me but doesn’t say anything. The other models start walking out and it’s like they’re my models and this is my show and I need to make sure they know they’re killing it right now. When the third model gets to the end of the runway and twirls around before walking back, I shoot to my feet.

“Yes! Yes, yes, yes. Do your thing, girl.”

Heads start glaring backward. Some of the models look over at me and try their best to stick to the task. Derrick gets up, grabs my hand and walks me to the exit.
