Chapter Twenty-Five

Iroll over with a stretch and feel a heavy object pressed against me. Frustrated, I try to pull the covers over me, hiding my head from the morning light.

“Morning,” a cheery voice says. I groan as I peer over the covers.

Jess is sitting up, her back resting against the headrest. On her lap, my copy of Great Expectations lies open to a random page.

“I’ve never read this book.” I watch as Jess flicks to the next page. She looks up at me, a smile on her face. “Hi.”

“Hey.” I groggily pull myself into a sitting position.

“How was last night?” she asks, a knowing smile on her face.

“It was fine.” I slip out of bed and head into the bathroom.

“Did you go back to his room?” she calls through the half-closed door.

“We just talked,” I call back before running the faucet to wet my toothbrush.

In the mirror, I watch as Jess appears in the doorway, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed.

“Just talked.” She wiggles her eyebrows at me, and I roll my eyes at her in the mirror as I continue to brush my teeth.

After a few minutes, I spit out the toothpaste, wipe my mouth, and turn to face her.

“It’s a bit weird talking to you about your brother.”

It’s now her turn to roll her eyes. “This is exactly what I didn’t want to happen. Yesterday you would have told me all the details, what you were feeling, how much of a dick he is.” She chuckles. “I mean, he’s my brother. I know he’s a dick. I just didn’t think he would have fucked things up this quickly.”

I laugh at her words and walk into the bedroom. At my wardrobe, I pull out a pair of old blue jeans and a sweatshirt.

“What happened?” Jess’s voice is close behind, and I turn to find concern in her eyes.

I sigh, tossing the clothes on my rumbled bed.

After thirty minutes, I have finished telling Jess everything about last night. She covered her ears when I told her about our bathroom incident, and our interaction in his bedroom, so I skipped over the details. Jess didn’t say anything as I tried to explain how I feel when I’m with Theo, how it’s different from when I was with James and how I can’t let James go, despite everything.

Jess’s brow creased slightly when I told her that thinking of James makes me feel guilty, like I’m betraying Theo.

When I’m finally finished talking Jess, takes my hand in hers. “Well, you’re in deep shit, aren’t you?”

I laugh and she gives me a soft smile.

“I like Theo,” I tell her. “I like the way I feel when I’m with him, how he holds me, how he makes me feel like my heart is knitting itself back together. But James,” I continue, “he was always a constant throughout my entire university experience. If I’m being honest, he was the first boy I ever loved. I had dated a few boys in high school, but I don’t think I ever loved them.
