Chapter Twenty-Five
Iroll over with a stretch and feel a heavy object pressed against me. Frustrated, I try to pull the covers over me, hiding my head from the morning light.
âMorning,â a cheery voice says. I groan as I peer over the covers.
Jess is sitting up, her back resting against the headrest. On her lap, my copy of Great Expectations lies open to a random page.
âIâve never read this book.â I watch as Jess flicks to the next page. She looks up at me, a smile on her face. âHi.â
âHey.â I groggily pull myself into a sitting position.
âHow was last night?â she asks, a knowing smile on her face.
âIt was fine.â I slip out of bed and head into the bathroom.
âDid you go back to his room?â she calls through the half-closed door.
âWe just talked,â I call back before running the faucet to wet my toothbrush.
In the mirror, I watch as Jess appears in the doorway, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed.
âJust talked.â She wiggles her eyebrows at me, and I roll my eyes at her in the mirror as I continue to brush my teeth.
After a few minutes, I spit out the toothpaste, wipe my mouth, and turn to face her.
âItâs a bit weird talking to you about your brother.â
Itâs now her turn to roll her eyes. âThis is exactly what I didnât want to happen. Yesterday you would have told me all the details, what you were feeling, how much of a dick he is.â She chuckles. âI mean, heâs my brother. I know heâs a dick. I just didnât think he would have fucked things up this quickly.â
I laugh at her words and walk into the bedroom. At my wardrobe, I pull out a pair of old blue jeans and a sweatshirt.
âWhat happened?â Jessâs voice is close behind, and I turn to find concern in her eyes.
I sigh, tossing the clothes on my rumbled bed.
After thirty minutes, I have finished telling Jess everything about last night. She covered her ears when I told her about our bathroom incident, and our interaction in his bedroom, so I skipped over the details. Jess didnât say anything as I tried to explain how I feel when Iâm with Theo, how itâs different from when I was with James and how I canât let James go, despite everything.
Jessâs brow creased slightly when I told her that thinking of James makes me feel guilty, like Iâm betraying Theo.
When Iâm finally finished talking Jess, takes my hand in hers. âWell, youâre in deep shit, arenât you?â
I laugh and she gives me a soft smile.
âI like Theo,â I tell her. âI like the way I feel when Iâm with him, how he holds me, how he makes me feel like my heart is knitting itself back together. But James,â I continue, âhe was always a constant throughout my entire university experience. If Iâm being honest, he was the first boy I ever loved. I had dated a few boys in high school, but I donât think I ever loved them.
