NOW that Emory was alone, now that Kyle wasn’t right next to him, everything began to hit home. He pulled the comforter tighter around him, but he still felt cold and his heart was beating too fast. It was too dark. Emory thought he felt okay when he was drinking hot chocolate with Kyle, but now the walls of the room seemed to be getting closer and closer.

Jerking himself up into a sitting position, Emory tried to take deep, calming breaths. His whole body convulsed in a shiver. He hadn’t had any control over the situation, and that’s what was most terrifying. It wasn’t like he didn’t know what it was like to get the shit beaten out of him. Hell, he’d had worse. As he had gotten older, he had been able to defend himself from his father. This, though, this had been like when he was a little kid and unable to do anything to stop it when his father hurt him. There were guys who had gotten a little rough during sex before, but this definitely took the cake. He just didn’t know how bad it could have been. He didn’t know if the guy would have stopped if Kyle hadn’t shown up.

Kyle.

Emory pulled up his knees and clasped his arms around them. Kyle had been so wonderful. Emory hated that he had been so weak. But it had felt so good to give in and let someone take care of him. No one really ever had. He couldn’t even bring himself to be embarrassed that he asked Kyle to stay for his bath. Kyle would never hurt him. He knew that. Kyle’s touch had been so soothing and gentle and calming… and loving.

“Don’t even go there, Em,” he whispered into the dark.

After another hour of trying to get to sleep, Emory still couldn’t get his mind to turn off. The events he most wanted to forget kept replaying over and over again in his head. He told himself he was just going to go to the bathroom to splash some water on his face, but on the way back, he passed his own room and found himself standing in front of Kyle’s. The door was ajar. Emory couldn’t believe he was being such a Peeping Tom, but he needed to see Kyle—or at least the shape of Kyle in his bed.

The moon streamed in through a part in the curtains, weaving a strip of light across the bed. It illuminated the room just enough that Emory could make out Kyle lying on his side facing the door. Kyle was so beautiful. And so good. Emory had yelled obscenities at the man earlier that night, yet for some reason he had come after Emory and saved him, taken care of him. Emory held on to the doorjamb, terrified he might actually start walking toward the bed, pulled toward Kyle by some sort of invisible tractor beam. He didn’t want to remember how good it had felt to fall asleep in that bed with Kyle all those weeks ago.
