“Did you have a nice evening?” Mona asked as Fenella made coffee the next morning.
“It was lovely,” Fenella replied.
“Lovely? Tell me more.”
“The food was incredible. Todd and the chef are friends, so he made us our own ten-course meal. I’ve no idea what I ate, but everything was delicious. Dessert was a chocolate soufflé, and there was very nearly a riot in the dining room when we were served because it isn’t on the menu, apparently.”
“And Todd was an interesting companion?”
“He was fascinating. His stories are amazing. I’d almost think he was making them up, but Jack was quite jealous that I’d even met the man. Apparently he’s very famous in some circles.”
“In musical circles, certainly,” Mona agreed. “I was surprised that he remembered when I had him come to play for Max. Those little concerts were very special to me, but I didn’t expect anyone else to remember them.”
“He seems like an almost perfect man,” Fenella sighed. “There must be something horribly wrong with him.”
Mona chuckled. “Maybe he’s the man you’ve been waiting for your whole life,” she suggested.
“I don’t know. It’s far too early to say.”
“And Daniel is still a problem.”
“Daniel isn’t a problem, exactly.”
“Yes, he is. You’d started to fall in love with him before he went away, and now you’re feeling disloyal when you think about Todd, even though Daniel is the one who’s living with someone else.”
“Maybe I should stop dating.”
“Maybe you should just embrace everything that life offers you and stop worrying so much.”
“Maybe,” Fenella muttered. The knock on the door startled both of them.
“I’m a mess,” Fenella said as she looked down at her pajamas.
“Yes, you are. I hope it isn’t anyone important.”
Fenella sighed. It was bound to be Daniel or Todd. It was always someone important when she looked her worst.
“Flowers,” the man at the door said, handing Fenella a huge bouquet of roses. He turned and disappeared back down the corridor before Fenella could reply.
“Flowers,” she said to Mona as she shut the door behind him.
“Let me guess, Todd had a wonderful time,” Mona said. “Although it has been a few days since you’ve heard from Donald. Maybe he misses you.”
Fenella carried the flowers into the kitchen and found another vase. Once the flowers were in water, she carried the vase into her bedroom. The flowers from last night were already filling the kitchen with fragrance. She pulled the card out of the middle of the bouquet before she walked back to the kitchen.
“Thank you for a wonderful evening, Todd,” she read to Mona.
“Donald is slipping. He’s not going to be happy when he hears about Todd.”
“If he hears about Todd.”
“Oh, he’ll hear. If you don’t tell him, someone else will. Todd gets talked about nearly as much as Donald, you know.”
Fenella shook her head. “Why do people care? Todd should be able to have dinner with someone without the whole island talking about him.”
“People are always interested in what the wealthy and the famous are doing. Make no mistake, people are talking about you, too.
