Cuarón’s subtle manipulation of foreground and background Mexican countryside displays construction workers operating in precarious conditions, a fisherman whose life is being destroyed by modernization, and students’ demonstrations (“Interview with Slavoj Žižek” in the Criterion Collection DVD of Y tu mama también). Finally, The Crime of Father Amaro is an anti-clerical work that blends sacred and profane iconography. For this reason, it generated censorship controversies that in the end functioned as a sounding board for the film at the box office.
