RACHEL
CHAPTER 23
The moment Rachel walked into her motherâs kitchen, she almost wished she were back in the buggy with Jonas. Almost.
âWas that a buggy I heard in the driveway?â her mother asked in a singsong voice. She stood at the counter mixing together cookie dough. Beside her was Verna, who, likewise, was busy pouring flour into a large bowl.
Rachel had almost forgotten that she was supposed to help her mother and Verna bake cookies for MayFest.
Tossing her small bag onto the counter, Rachel walked over to the sofa along the back wall. She flopped onto it and leaned back, closing her eyes and giving an exhausted sigh. âObviously you heard the buggy, Maem, or you wouldnât be asking.â
She thought she heard Verna snicker.
Wilma clucked her tongue. âNow, Rachel,â she began, âit was just a simple question. No need to take such a tone.â
Rachelâs eyes opened and she stared at her mother. âOh really? Mayhaps youâd understand better if you had just endured the worldâs longest buggy ride with Jonas Esh as the driver!â
This time, there was no mistaking the chuckle that slipped past Vernaâs lips.
âOh now, seriously, Rachel.â Wilma gave a nervous laugh. She gave Rachel a strong look and then glanced in Vernaâs direction as if to warn her daughter to watch what she said. For the life of her, Rachel couldnât figure out why. Everyone knew that Jonas was a bit over-the-top.
âI am being serious.â She sat up and leaned forward, her elbows on her knees. âI donât think he knows the meaning of silence. He just talks and talks and talks.â She rolled her eyes. âEven if Iâd wanted toâand I didnât!âIâd never have gotten a word in edgewise.â
Verna suppressed a smile. âThen you were in luck, Rachel. No need for idle chitchat if he did all the talking.â
âI guess thatâs one way to look at it.â She stood up and walked over to join her mother at the counter. Peering over her motherâs shoulder, she saw that she was making butterscotch potato chip cookies. âBut it gets worse.â
Verna dumped a measuring cup full of sugar into her bowl. âWorse? How so?â
Wilma made a scoffing noise. âSounds like thatâs not possible, Rachel. Iâve heard nothing but complaints from you about that boy since the day you started working for Edna.â
From where she stood, Rachel noticed that Verna looked up, a thoughtful expression on her face. The older woman stared at the ceiling for a long moment and then, slowly, shifted her gaze to look at Rachel.
Uncertain what that meant, Rachel shrugged it off. Despite her motherâs close friendship with the woman, Verna hardly knew her. Whatever she was thinking was of no concern to Rachel. âItâs Edna,â she said in a flat, emotionless tone.
Wilmaâs mouth opened and she caught her breath. âOh help!â She reached up to touch her face, leaving traces of flour on her cheeks. âWhat have you done now, Rachel? You best not have gotten fired or upset my dear friend.â
âItâs the reverse, actually.â Rachel lifted her chin.
