ON MONDAY, AS I MAKE my normal stop at the coffee shop, I try not to feel excited or expectant. The only reason Carlton showed up Friday was because he ran out of coffee to brew at home. No doubt he’s restocked over the weekend and won’t be making an appearance today.

I can’t help but hope, however, and feel ridiculously droopy when a quick scan around the shop proves he isn’t here.

Of course he isn’t.

Why would I expect anything else?

I really need to get some perspective. This pattern of thinking isn’t good for me.

I’m still working on lecturing myself when I’m aware of someone stepping into the line behind me. I glance back instinctively and twitch in surprise when I realize it’s Carlton.

Trying very hard not to smile, I ask, “No coffee at home?”

“No. I still haven’t bought more.”

“Ah well. This is probably better anyway.”

“It is.”

I smile toward the counter, wishing every nerve in my body didn’t go into high alert every time I’m in his presence.

It feels like Carlton might be smiling too, but since I’m facing forward, I can’t confirm this suspicion.

After both of us have ordered and moved out of the way to wait, he adjusts so he’s facing me. His eyes move up and down over my body before they stay on my face.

I might have dressed with more care this morning than normal on the off chance I’d run into him. I’m wearing a long, soft skirt and a top that gives a faint hint of cleavage.

He notices. His eyes heat up briefly before he’s distracted by getting his coffee.

Since he ordered plain coffee again, it’s ready before my fancier drink is.

“When do you present your proposal to Skytop?” I ask.

“Tomorrow. Lance and I will drive out there.”

“Okay. Good luck with it. I’m sure it will go well.”

“We’ll see.”

I peer at his face. “You feel pretty good about it, don’t you?”

“Yeah.” He gives a soft huff of amusement. “It’s solid work. Honestly, if they don’t like it, I’ll think they’re out of their minds.”

I laugh at that and reach over to squeeze his arm. “That’s the right way to think about it.” My drink is ready, so I reach for it. “Let me know how it goes.”

“I will.”

He falls into step with me as we leave the shop, and once again we walk down the block together before we part ways to go to our respective offices.

It’s hardly a mystery why, but I’m in a good mood again today.
