CHAPTER ELEVEN

SETH’S BREATH BECAME Rainey’s breath as his mouth lingered over hers. The scent of him—mint, brisk after-shave, even faint traces of sawdust—increased her hunger for a kiss that seemed tortuously slow in coming.

His strong hands clasped her back tighter, pulling her body flush against the muscled length of him. The impact of his hard, hot flesh against her chilled skin melted any control she might have had.

He slid his palms over her cropped shirt, bracketing her ribs and waist as his strong thumbs caressed the undersides of her suddenly needy breasts.

When at last he lowered his head and pressed his firm lips to hers, Rainey moaned at the contact. At the sound, he forced her lips apart and thrust his silky tongue inside her mouth, urgently tasting, and she answered with her own hunger, a desire to have all of him.

They kissed as if they already knew each other’s mouths, each other’s needs. As if they’d been doing this for weeks, months, years. A lifetime. They kissed in a dizzying give and take that seemed to last forever, but still didn’t satisfy.

He broke off and twined his long fingers into her hair, angling her head for a better fit, then he slanted his open mouth over hers to take—and give—some more.

Again, they tasted each other in movements that quickly became ravenous.

Hungry. Demanding.

They broke off, breathless, and stared into each other’s eyes as if disbelieving.

“Man,” he whispered, then danced her backward as he pressed his lips to her cheek, up to her temple, down to her ear. She clamped her arms around his neck as he lifted her off her feet. He perched her on the porch rail and fitted her thighs high around his hips. Kissing her again, he held the core of her tight against him, holding her up, clasping her small bottom in his big hands. His bold manhandling overwhelmed her senses, but at the same time thrilled her.

“Seth…wait.”

“Okay,” he whispered. “Okay.” He tightened his arms around her back. He held her gently while his muscles quivered and their pulses seemed to beat in sync.

They clung in that entwined position for some seconds, both struggling for control.

Rainey felt small and delicate as he held her against his body with his massive arms. It felt so right. She’d never, ever been held like this before. So possessively. Terrible cravings assailed her. As if, were it physically possible, she would fuse her very being with his. She pressed into him, overcome by this raw need.

“Rainey,” he groaned, and lowered his face to her neck, and the feel of his hot, moist breath on her skin made her insides thrum.

“Seth,” she groaned in reply, because she had a sudden need to say his name, too. She had to make what they were doing seem more real, somehow, to bring them back to earth. “Seth,” she said again. But the spell couldn’t be so easily broken. His embrace only tightened at the sound of her voice repeating his name.

He brought his mouth around to hers for another greedy, hot kiss.
