Chapter 6.

And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer,

believing, ye shall receive.

Matthew 21:22

Sadness flooded through her. In a flash, everything had gone from light to dark. It was all too much, and Beth couldn’t hold back any longer. Even with her brother-in-law and his wife still in the room, she burst into a fresh flood of tears.

“Excuse me, Mrs. Byler?” asked the newly familiar voice of Officer Brady.

Beth looked up and sniffed before she cleared her throat. “Officer, this is Thomas Byler and Katherine Byler. Thomas is my husband’s brother.”

The officer nodded to them then looked back at Beth. “Are you able to talk to the press?”

She shook her head.

“Your bishop said no?” The officer raised his eyebrows and his eyes widened.

She nodded away tears with the back of her hand while Katherine placed a hand on her shoulder.

“Well, I can see that decision mustn’t have been very easy, but I can make the appeal on your behalf. We’ve already got a designated number that anyone with any information can call.”

“Oh thank you. Thank you.” She sniffed back her tears.

“We’re going to do our best to find your baby. I promise I won’t stop doing my job until then,” Officer Brady said, his eyes appearing as sincere as his words.

“I’m afraid that’s all we could get off the footage. She was seen coming into the hospital, alone, and leaving with a baby at around eight o’clock. Good news is we can use this to put over the networks.”

Just then, the officer’s cell phone rang. Officer Brady pulled it from his pocket and lifted it to his ear. “Okay, I’ll be right out.” He slid the phone into his pants pocket. “The media are outside.” With that, he walked out of her room.

Katherine asked, “Do you want me to stay with you, Beth?”

Beth shook her head. “Thank you so much for coming, but I just need to be alone.”

“We’ll pray for you, and for Zac’s return,” Thomas said.

“Please visit Jonas for me?” Beth said.

“We will,” Thomas said as Katherine leaned over and kissed her cheek.

Right after they left, a nurse came in to take her blood pressure and pulse. As the nurse strapped her arm, Beth said, “They’ll be through the roof right now. Not much point taking them.”

“We need to follow the rules,” the nurse said firmly. “I’m praying for your baby to come back to you.”

Beth looked up into the kind brown eyes of the nurse. “Thank you.”

The nurse didn’t tell her what the results were and neither did she ask. Now that she was alone in her
