Chapter 6.
And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer,
believing, ye shall receive.
Matthew 21:22
Sadness flooded through her. In a flash, everything had gone from light to dark. It was all too much, and Beth couldnât hold back any longer. Even with her brother-in-law and his wife still in the room, she burst into a fresh flood of tears.
âExcuse me, Mrs. Byler?â asked the newly familiar voice of Officer Brady.
Beth looked up and sniffed before she cleared her throat. âOfficer, this is Thomas Byler and Katherine Byler. Thomas is my husbandâs brother.â
The officer nodded to them then looked back at Beth. âAre you able to talk to the press?â
She shook her head.
âYour bishop said no?â The officer raised his eyebrows and his eyes widened.
She nodded away tears with the back of her hand while Katherine placed a hand on her shoulder.
âWell, I can see that decision mustnât have been very easy, but I can make the appeal on your behalf. Weâve already got a designated number that anyone with any information can call.â
âOh thank you. Thank you.â She sniffed back her tears.
âWeâre going to do our best to find your baby. I promise I wonât stop doing my job until then,â Officer Brady said, his eyes appearing as sincere as his words.
âThank you so much.â Beth rubbed at her puffy eyes.
âYou can thank us when youâre holding your son again,â he said, his face looking stern all of a sudden. He pulled out a black and white grainy photograph from his pocket. âWas this the woman who took your baby last night?â
Beth looked, seeing an image of half a face. âI canât say for certain. It couldâve been, but Iâm not sure.â
âIâm afraid thatâs all we could get off the footage. She was seen coming into the hospital, alone, and leaving with a baby at around eight oâclock. Good news is we can use this to put over the networks.â
Just then, the officerâs cell phone rang. Officer Brady pulled it from his pocket and lifted it to his ear. âOkay, Iâll be right out.â He slid the phone into his pants pocket. âThe media are outside.â With that, he walked out of her room.
Katherine asked, âDo you want me to stay with you, Beth?â
Beth shook her head. âThank you so much for coming, but I just need to be alone.â
âWeâll pray for you, and for Zacâs return,â Thomas said.
âPlease visit Jonas for me?â Beth said.
âWe will,â Thomas said as Katherine leaned over and kissed her cheek.
Right after they left, a nurse came in to take her blood pressure and pulse. As the nurse strapped her arm, Beth said, âTheyâll be through the roof right now. Not much point taking them.â
âWe need to follow the rules,â the nurse said firmly. âIâm praying for your baby to come back to you.â
Beth looked up into the kind brown eyes of the nurse. âThank you.â
The nurse didnât tell her what the results were and neither did she ask. Now that she was alone in her
