CHAPTER 49
SIOUX FALLS
While Stoker and Rivera were off on their hunt, Z was responsible for getting updates on Ann Higgins’s condition, watching Stoker’s email for messages from the nurse at the jail, searching for clues about who might have tried to kill Ann Higgins, and a few dozen other items. However, his most important task was monitoring Michael Briggs’s movements using the GPS tracking devices in his intestines and shoe. Z was hoping Brigg’s next moves would provide clues about the grand mystery of Ann Higgins, coyotes, and a man named Nichols. Despite the nine-degree temperature on the streets of Sioux Falls this morning, Z waited comfortably in the warmth of a plain white Ford Crown Victoria. The car faced east on 5th Street, offering Z a perfect vantage point of the doors to the Minnehaha County jail. While Z waited for Briggs to make bail and exit, he executed his techie duties by auditing the security of his team’s information systems throughout the Dakotas and Minnesota.
He would not have to follow Briggs too closely, however. The military-grade GPS technology and tracking software could track him almost anywhere and know his precise location within inches. At about nine twenty Briggs emerged from the jail and jumped into a taxi. Z followed from a block or two behind the cab as it drove north on Minnesota Avenue. Ten minutes later Briggs’s taxi stopped in front of the terminal at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport. Z had to split off from the cab and take his car into the short-term parking area. Even though he lost track of Briggs visually, he could see exactly where he was on his computer’s screen. Three minutes later, Z had parked his car and entered the airport. He casually tracked Briggs’s signal until he located him at an airline kiosk trying to check in for a flight. Z closed his sleek computer and stepped closer to Briggs who seemed to be having trouble with electronic check-in.
Z eavesdropped over Briggs’s shoulder so he could see the kiosk screen and read that Briggs would be flying to Denver. As the kiosk printed out Brigg’s ticket, Z stepped back a few feet so Briggs would not notice him. Briggs took his documents and walked toward the concourse. Z casually followed the man. He watched Briggs pass through his security screenings. The security screeners did not detect either GPS tracker in Briggs’ intestines or shoe. “God bless the USA, and God bless carbon fiber nanotechnology,” Z said to himself and he saw Briggs putting his shoes back on. A few moments later the criminal who had just made bail walked around a corner and out of Z’s sight.
Z returned to the parking lot, opened up his computer, and waited for just over thirty minutes. The entire time he watched a small icon as it sat on a map rendered on his screen. He watched the dot representing Briggs move onto the plane. Next, the icon progressed toward the runway. Then, all of a sudden, he noticed that Briggs began to travel rapidly down the runway.
