* * * * *

A little after twelve, there was a knock on the door and Ash automatically saved the

open word document on the laptop. He pushed back his chair and stood, glancing down at

Hope, relieved to see that the only indication she"d heard their visitor was a slight wrinkling

of her brow. With the wooden floorboards cool beneath his bare feet, Ash strode to the front

door and opened it. His eyes widened in surprise at the sight of Neal holding up two tickets

and beaming from ear to ear.

“I managed to get two tickets to the Harold Lloyd revival over in Montgomery and I

thought, since we missed the Buster Keaton one, we could give it another shot,” Neal said

brightly. “What do you say?”

“Well—”

“Come on… Kaleb can handle Hope. I know this great Italian we can go to first…”

Yeah, Kaleb could handle Hope, and it had been so long since he"d been out of the

house, never mind on an actual date with another human being, that Ash felt a little curl of

excitement in his belly. “You"re on,” he said on a rush, opening the door wide and beckoning

the other man inside.

In the kitchen, he brewed a fresh pot of coffee and joined Neal at the table. Over the

last month, the doctor had swung by the house on a number of occasions to see how Ash was

settling in. Of course, Ash knew that was an excuse to see him, but he was as susceptible to

admiration as the next guy, so he"d never called him on it. The guy was easy company and

was undeniably attractive with sandy blond hair, hazel eyes, and a gentle smile. Neal was

roughly the same height as Kaleb, but Ash thought he lacked Kaleb"s ease of carriage and

confidence, as well as the fact that he was leaner and rangier than the cowboy. Ash sipped at

his coffee and tried to drag his attention back to what Neal was saying rather than mentally

comparing him to Kaleb.

“And she complained she could see spots in front of her eyes, but her blood sugar and

pressure was fine, so I was kind of out of ideas until she said the only time she didn"t see the

spots was at night and first thing in the morning.”

“So what was it?”

Neal chuckled throatily. “Her glasses were dirty.”

“No!”

“Seriously. Small town folk, I swear.”

“That"s unbelievable. I mean, I"m a journalist for crying out loud, but even I couldn"t

make that shit up.” Ash laughed boisterously and tipped another spoonful of sugar into his

coffee.

“Your teeth are gonna fall out of your head before you"re thirty,” Neal teased and Ash

poked out his tongue.

“That"s what I keep telling him.”

Ash looked up at the sound of Kaleb"s voice from where the man lounged against the

doorway to the kitchen. “Hey,” he said casually, noting the tightening of Neal"s fingers

around his coffee cup and the tension in Kaleb"s jaw. “I didn"t hear you come in.”

“Probably slithered through the mail slot,” Neal mumbled and Ash could hardly

control the twitching of his own lips. Judging by the thinning of Kaleb"s lips, his mirth

wouldn"t be appreciated.
