It didn't take long to gather Ethan's belongings together and pile them into Caleb's car.

"I'm not much of a hoarder," Ethan explained, as he checked the flat for anything he might have missed.

"You should probably keep this place for a while, in case things don't work out between us," Caleb said. "I can pay the rent for as long as you need."

Ethan's first instinct was to argue that he knew what he was doing, but he understood Caleb was only thinking of him. "Okay. But not for too long."

"We should know pretty soon if this is going to work or not," Caleb said, as they carried the last of Ethan's belongings to the car. "If your memory vanishing becomes too much for one of us, at least you'll have this place to come back to."

They spotted Phil across the car park.

"Ethan!" The auburn-haired man waved wildly from the side of the most beat-up car Caleb had ever laid eyes on. "What are you doing with that box?"

"Phil?" Caleb asked.

"That's him," Ethan confirmed as he put the box into the boot of Caleb's car. He checked his watch and realised Phil must be on his lunch break. He waved his friend over. "Phil, say hi to Caleb. Caleb, this is Phil."

Phil looked Caleb over as though he were something the dog had thrown up. "Ethan, can I have a word?"

"Sure."

Phil grabbed his arm and dragged him away from Caleb's car. "Alone, if you don't mind, Caleb."

Ethan didn't bother to argue with him, but he made sure that while they were out of hearing distance, Caleb could still see them. Now wouldn't be a good time to lose his memory. "Phil, please don't be an arsehole about this."

"Have you lost your fucking mind? How are you planning on living with a man you'll keep forgetting?"

"By planning ahead. Like now. I'm still in his presence, so I remember who he is and what we've shared."

"You don't remember your first night together though."

"No."

"And as soon as you leave him, you'll forget him all over again. This isn't putting things together after you lose your memory in some freak accident. This is a constant problem that won't ever go away. What are you planning on doing, becoming joined at the bloody hip?"

"That would be rather impractical, wouldn't it? I doubt my boss would appreciate Caleb trailing after me all day or sitting on my lap in meetings, no matter how much I might like the idea."

"Be serious, Ethan. This isn't going to work."

"I am being serious. We're going to give this a try. We'll spend as much time together as we can, but when we do have to part, we're going to find a way to make sure we provide me with enough information that we can quickly pick things up again."

"Are you even listening to yourself? How are you supposed to have a relationship with someone you keep forgetting?"

Ethan was becoming frustrated with everyone telling him what he could and couldn't do. "I like him, Phil.
