Chapter Three

My head throbbed. It felt as though someone had taken a sledgehammer to it and tried to open me up by crushing it into little pieces. Slowly I opened my eyes. The light was glaring and hurt to stare up at it. I tried to move but the feel of something sharp digging into my arm made me swear.

"Heather? Heather? Can you hear me?" The sound of my mother's voice let me know that my head hurt for good reason. Something had happened, but for the life of me I couldn't remember what it was.

I tried to sit up again but a hand on my shoulder pressed me back into the pillows.

"I don't think you should be moving around too much. It can't be good for you... We need to have a doctor look at you." She moved away from me and I tried to open my mouth to call her back. But the only sound that left my lips was a croak.

My throat ached. It was dry and sore and it felt as though I hadn't taken a drink in a week. I lifted my arm and stared at the needle embedded in my skin. A flash of memory made me wince. The feeling of falling had me grabbing out at the edge of the bed. I clung on as I waited for the feeling to pass. When it did I opened my eyes once more.

The pain in my head was slowly beginning to fade. It was still there but it was far more manageable than it had been two minutes before.

"Miss Sampson, so good to see you awake. You gave everyone quite the fright." A small squat doctor moved into the room and took his place up beside me.

I stared at him, unsure if I should recognise him or not. Panic hit me for a second as I wondered if perhaps I had amnesia. It was something I had always worried about. How awful would it be, to be trapped in your head, not knowing those around you who knew everything about your past...

"No need to look so worried. I'm Doctor Frasier. We haven't met before. When they brought you here from Summer Meadow General you were unconscious."

"Moved?" My voice was coarse as though unused and I was desperate for water. I tried for a third time to sit up and only succeeded with the doctor's help.

He picked up a cup from the bedside locker and filled it with water before handing it to me. I grabbed it gratefully and took a large gulp. I immediately regretted it. The water burned against my sore throat, making me gasp.

"Yes, by request of Aaron Ashcroft and your mother, you were moved here... It's a private facility..." The doctor smiled at me sympathetically.

Aaron. His name made the ache in my head a lot worse. It also reminded me of the hole in my chest—the one he had ripped out the night he had walked away from me.
