Chapter 18

“Another party?” It had only been a couple of days since they had bailed Mattie out of jail. Kate looked at September with raised eyebrows as they walked up the cracked sidewalk to September's house. The bulb in the front porch light had been changed to a black light. The purplish light highlighted the small white patches in the house’s stucco finish. A guy sitting on the porch steps was smoking a cigarette and talking to a girl in a black minidress.

“She asked this time. It’s Gena’s birthday.” September opened the screen door and let Kate walk in ahead of her.

Compared to the parties Mattie had been throwing, this one was small. There were about twenty-five people scattered around the dimly lit living room and kitchen. The furniture had been pushed back against the walls to make room for people to dance and Mattie had hung a large piece of paper and a marker on the wall for people to write Heather well wishes on. September noticed someone had missed the paper completely and hoped it wasn’t a permanent marker.

An old Garbage CD was playing on the stereo and the television was tuned to MTV with the sound off. Two couples were dancing in the middle of the living room while another couple was making out on the couch. Almost everyone was drinking, but no one seemed to be doing any drugs. The only smoke in the air September could smell was definitely cigarette smoke.

When Kate and September’s eyes had adjusted to the dim light, they found Mattie and Angel coming out of the kitchen. Mattie was wearing her usual jeans and a black lace-edged tank top under a sheer shirt. Angel was wearing a black leather mini skirt and bustier. Mattie offered them a bite of the chocolate chip cookie she was eating.

“I thought you were allergic to nuts.” September looked at Mattie questioningly.

“What made you think that?”

September shook her head as if to clear it. That was Lizzie. “I–nothing.”

“Let me get you some of my special brew.” Angel went back into the kitchen and returned a few minutes later with two large cups of red liquid with fruit floating in them. She handed them to September and Kate.

September looked at the cup suspiciously and sniffed at the contents. It looked and smelled like Kool-Aid. Kate seemed familiar with the drink. She pulled a cherry out of the glass, ate it, and took a sip of the drink.

“What is it?” September continued to eye the cup. She didn't trust anything Angel gave her.

“It’s a peace offering. If you’re Mattie’s friend, I want us to be friends too.” Angel smiled sweetly.

“It’s jungle juice.” Mattie raised her own glass and took a drink. “Try it.”

“It tastes like fruit punch.” September took a small sip. She wasn’t sure she should trust Angel, but it would be nice if they could at least be civil with each other. She pulled a slice of orange out of the glass and ate it. It had a slightly bitter after taste.
