Jake sat on the beige leather sofa, his legs stretched out before him, and watched the fire flicker in the hearth. Heâd showered and shaved, hoping Maggie would have come to some kind of decision.
A part of him feared the intimacy making love would bring, but that wasnât the part of him that reacted so strongly to her touch. Her scent. Her kiss.
Heâd placed several of Sharonâs CDs in the stereo, and the sound of classical music filled the room. Beethoven had seemed more conducive to romance than country and Western, his music of choice.
Maybe Maggie would stay in her room all night, avoiding him and the topic that had lingered in his mind all afternoon.
And maybe that was okay, too.
Jake had a lot of thinking to do. Thinking about Kayla and Sam. About turning the ranch into something other than a fancy Wild West hotel catering to rich people wanting to play cowboy.
He wasnât sure why he looked up and into the arched doorway that led to the back part of the house, but he did. And he spotted Maggie.
She wore her hair up, but several blond strands dangled by her cheek and neck. The skin at her throat and chest was flushed from the bath. A pink robe covered what appeared to be a plain white nightgown. How could a woman dressed so simply, look so darn beautiful and alluring?
Heâd had enough women in the past slip into something more comfortable, usually something skimpy or slinky. Their choice of clothing and makeup clearly let him know just what kind of relaxation they were anticipating.
Jake didnât get the same clue from Maggie, but that didnât quell his desire in the least. For some reason, she had the power to turn him every which way but loose, with just her presence, her smile.
âWhy donât you sit over here?â he asked, patting the cushion beside him. As she stepped closer, he was drawn to her bare feet and toenails painted the shade of cotton candy and matching her pink robe. He doubted sheâd coordinated the colors just to catch his eye and entice him, but it worked just the same.
She sat closer to the armrest than to him, and an awkward silence followed. He contemplated how making love would alter their friendship forever. Sex had a way of changing things, especially for him. After a night of loving, and before the sun could rise, Jake naturally began to withdraw from the lady at hand.
As long as the woman didnât expect more from him than he was prepared to give her, it hadnât been a problem. But he wasnât sure what Maggie would expect from him. Or what he could offer her, other than a night of passion neither was likely to forget.
Maybe neither one of them was ready to make that ultimate, no-turning-back decision. Maggieâs expression was solemn, as though sheâd already made up her mind, but hadnât told him yet.
Did he dread hearing her answer? Or did he still harbor
