Chapter Ten

Maury looked like a three-year-old throwing a temper tantrum as he ran back and forth from the alley to the street, screaming and waving his arms. Grace under pressure wasn’t something he possessed.

“My car, my car…someone’s stolen my car. You bitch! It’s all your fault!

He was screaming to the shadows and a ghost of the past because the junkie hooker was long gone with his money, credit cards, and his cell phone; a revelation of truth Maury hadn’t arrived at until he reached a hand in his pocket to call the police.

“My phone, my phone, somebody’s stolen my phone.”

A wino seated by the entrance Calix had been hiding in just moments ago raised his mad dog bottle in a toast, “Welcome to the jungle, mate.”

“Oh, fuck you! What are you anyway, some wannabe Brit?”

“Better’n bein’ a trick who can’t find his car,” his laughter rang through the air having the same effect on Maury Earlene’s screeching did.

Maury ran over to the wino and wrapped his hands around his neck. He slammed the man’s head into the side of the concrete wall he was sitting against. He saw the faces of everyone who had ever wronged him. Visions of Earlene, Rum, and the junkie whore who had stolen his phone ran through his head. Like a slideshow of horror, it spurred him on. He was killing his past. He was killing everyone responsible for ruining his life. He never saw the blue lights cascading like a dance club color ball against the buildings. He only saw the blood that would be a witness against him in a court of law. Now he understood why people said they saw red when they went into an uncontrollable rage.

Danny pushed away the temptation to shoot the bastard. He knew who Maury was. He smiled when Maury’s body jumped with electricity. The stun-gun had taken the fight out of him. Watching Maury flop around on the concrete was entertaining.

“Get the fuck up. You’re going to jail.” Danny picked Maury up and held him against the wall with one hand. He leaned in and spoke so the wino and the crowd that had gathered wouldn’t hear him. “Your day’s coming, asshole. This is only the beginning of your hell.” He carried him over towards the car and cuffed him. “Watch your head.” He positioned his body so no one could see when he purposely slammed his head against the doorframe. He did, however, Mirandize him loud enough for witnesses to hear.

“I’ll testify against that bastard. He beat joe up for no reason.”

“Yeah, me too.”

“I will too. He just attacked him for no reason.”

“I need a bus at 2nd and Jefferson. I’ve got a man with a head wound.”

Danny leaned into the car and whispered to Maury, who was still incoherent, “I’m doing everything by the book. You’re going to pay for what you did to Rum.”

“What’s up, Danny?” a uniform strolled up towards him with his hand lazily rested on his gun.

“Dipshit jumped on Joe for no reason.
