Charli had meant to call her friends on her wedding night, but nerves had gotten the better of her and sheâd hardly remembered her name, let alone calling anyone. Now, it was very early in the morning. Her new husband had woken her by showering and humming some French song, which made her smile a lot. She had to call them before the news was everywhere.
Last night, Luc, like usual, had been kind and sweet. Heâd asked if it would bother her if he slept in his boxers, something he usually did apparently. Heâd promised to get pajama pants before sheâd answered. When theyâd been drunk and had gotten into bed together, theyâd been, well, drunk, with a loss of inhibitions, easily cuddling against each other, though clothed. Last nightâtheyâd been stiff and awkward in his boxers and her little PJs. Sheâd thought of asking to snuggle, of touching his tattoos spread across his chest and shoulders and part of his back that she could see clearly but had looked away so she wouldnât get caught staring at him yet again. Then heâd turned off the light, had said good night, and settled much too far away from her for her heart to handle.
Had he been repulsed by her confession? Mention asexuality and watch peopleâs facesâthe perplexed expression is obvious as is the slight distaste. It would be comical if it werenât so personal, and it was deeply personal. Luc hadnât shown that kind of expression. Not in the least. Heâd seemed interested and had openly shared how he was having problems with sex and the power dynamics involved, something pretty rare for a heterosexual guy. But he was a straight, non-ace dude, and his wants and desires were part of him which might make this marriage a little uncomfortable eventually. Or not. Knowing Luc, heâd never make her uncomfortable.
Gah, it was all so much to think about, and she had to call her friends and tell them before the press did, even if it was late where her friends were.
She dialed the numbers, ensuring this was a group call, so neither friend felt excluded, and pressed the button, holding her breath, hoping her friends wouldnât pick up so she didnât have to tell them.
Laney answered first, cheerful as ever, âCharli! How are you? Is that ringing I hear?â
âHi, Laney. Yes, Iâm group calling you and Rose. She hasnât picked up yet.â
Rose answered, and Laney said, âSpeak of the devil.â
Rose apparently heard that and laughed. âYou rang?â she said in a spooky voice.
God, how she missed her buddies. Missed this easy camaraderie, the laughing, the sharing, the way her friends always held her hands through it all. She hoped they wouldnât be too angry at her now that she had let go and done something on her own.
Rose and Laney were teasing each other, and it was always hard to get a word in.
âHow are you feeling? Getting better?â Charli asked Laney when her friends had quieted a little, then
