“Why did you let me drink that much, Lanie? This is awful. And on a Sunday no less. Why do they have to do Blackout on a Sunday?” Becca had just returned from her third visit to the bathroom, I’m assuming ridding her body of the excess alcohol she enjoyed yesterday. “Please don’t let me do that again anytime soon.” She plopped on her bed in total despair.

“Hey, there was no way I was going to stop anything you were doing yesterday. But I’ll definitely remind you of this morning next time.” I was getting my bag ready to head out to class. “Am I to assume you aren’t going to class today?” I said this with a sarcastic chuckle.

“I’m not moving from this bed unless I have to spew the contents of my stomach again.” She rolled over to look at me as I was starting toward the door. “Lane, FYI, you and Xander are doing a terrible job of keeping whatever you’re calling what you guys are a secret.”

She laughed when I gave her a quizzical look. “And no, it has nothing to do with the time you both spent in the corner or the hot kiss most of us witnessed. It has everything to do with the way you look at each other,” Becca said with a soft chuckle.

My face, I was sure, displayed my surprise.

“I wish Ty looked at me like that. Then I would know how he really felt,” Becca whispered, her voice tinged with sadness.

I paused on my way out, looking at her again but now with concern all over my face.

“Don’t you worry about me; I have that all under control. He saw me yesterday, and he knows I’m not going to put up with much more of his shit. Maybe I’m going to take up with one of the several guys I could have gone home with.”

Her face was all confidence, but I knew something else was behind her shield. “Lanie, I know you’re struggling with stuff, but don’t lose him. You may not see what others see. I just wanted to let you know.”

I was rendered silent. I stood there longer than I should have, now probably late to class. There was a lot to digest in those few sentences Becca delivered.

“OK, so we aren’t fooling anyone.” I chuckled. “But that’s not what concerns me most about what you just said.” I trained my eyes on her, knowing she wasn’t feeling well enough for a full-blown heart-to-heart. “Are you and Ty alright?”

She sat up a bit, seemingly ready to talk, but then sat back against her pillow with a loud sigh. “We’re fine, Lanie. Don’t worry about us. I’ve got it all under control.” She looked over, saw my stare still on her, and conceded a bit. “We’ll talk, I promise, just not now. I need more sleep.” She rolled over, no longer facing me, before continuing, her voice muffled in her pillow. “I mean it. Don’t worry about me. I’m fine, really.
