Britain’s Foreign Secretary, Anthony Eden, had resigned in February 1938 after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain opened negotiations with fascist Italy. Other films reviewed in the broadcast included Mannequin with Joan Crawford and Tip-Off Girls with Evelyn Brent.

¶ By 1938 Katharine Hepburn had broken free from the ‘high tragedy’ mode that AC had complained of earlier. But the ‘crazy Kate’ replacement didn’t please him either. This broadcast was a stray contribution to his former BBC film talk slot, now in the hands of F. Andrew Rice, of the Yorkshire Post.
