Chapter 22

THERE WAS LITTLE TALK between them while they waited for Alex to arrive. Susan sat on the corner of the bed closest to the window, staring out at the passing vehicles on Highway 403. She whispered her daughter’s name a few times while Aaron and Sarah huddled close on the other bed.

Parkman was on his phone at the small desk, chatting with Darwin about something, while the hotel TV was on an all-news channel, the volume loud enough to talk under.

“You think we can find her daughter?” Aaron asked in a hushed voice.

Sarah nodded. “We will. Vivian gave me the impression that once Alex gets here, we can move forward.”

Aaron’s eyebrows drew close. “Move forward? That’s what she said? She wasn’t more specific?”

“She knows what we want.” Sarah snuck a glance at Susan. “My sister wouldn’t leave me with the impression of moving forward if that didn’t mean helping Susan reunite with her daughter. Otherwise, what are we doing here?” She refocused on Aaron. “If Vivian meant something else and we don’t help Susan, my sister knows that will really piss me off.” Sarah brushed a piece of lint off her jeans absentmindedly. “I don’t even want to think about that.” She leaned back on her elbows. “We’ll help this woman. But first, we find out what’s going on with Alex and what their connection is.”

Aaron rolled onto his back and stared at the ceiling, his hands laced together behind his head. “Yeah, what the hell is Alex up to in Hamilton?”

A soft rap on the door made Sarah snap sideways.

Parkman jerked up from his chair and got to the door first. Without saying a word, he opened it and stepped aside.

Alex entered the room.

His eyes roved between Parkman, Sarah, and Aaron until they found Susan.

Then he stopped moving and just stared at her.

Sarah wondered how they knew each other. What would have prompted Alex to kill her parents so long ago? Was that even true? And how could she love Benjamin, and yet none of them knew about this mysterious woman in Hamilton?

All those questions and more raced through Sarah’s mind as she watched the tension grow between Alex and Susan.

“Excuse me,” Alex said, gently touching Parkman’s sleeve. He unlocked eyes with Susan, nodded at Aaron, then moved closer and extended his hand to Sarah. She took it, and he squeezed her gently. “Please, give us a few moments.”

Aaron shook his head. “No, we can’t leave you alone with her.”

Alex turned and gave him a sidelong glance. “Not alone. I’ll speak with Susan first. Listen to what we talk about. Then I’ll have less to explain when it’s your turn. Cool?”

Aaron and Sarah nodded.

Parkman retook his seat at the desk and popped a new toothpick in the corner of his mouth.

Alex released Sarah’s hand, his eyes back on Susan. “Just give us some time to chat, and then I’ll explain everything.” He ambled over to stand in front of Susan.

“I’m so sorry,” he whispered.

Susan’s head lowered as tears dripped from her eyes.
