ELEVEN

Micah’s mind kept spinning around the facts, evidence and possibilities, trying to untangle them and form them into something worthwhile, something he could use to get some actual traction on this case. He’d snapped a few pictures of the gun with his cell phone, then placed the gun in an evidence bag he’d had in his backpack and put it in there. They’d heard no more signs of anyone on the trail and had given up tracking it to its end when Kate shut down.

Maybe it wasn’t fair to describe it like that—she’d been strong and determined most of the late afternoon and even when darkness fell. But something about the near encounter had shaken her and Micah had decided that whatever they stood to find wasn’t worth risking if she was so shaken.

To tell the truth, he was shaken too, he was able to admit to himself now that they could see Moose Haven in front of them, and were walking from the trailhead to his car.

“You need to go to the lodge.”

“I told you, I’m not endangering my family. Or their livelihood.”

And he didn’t doubt Kate’s determination, not in the slightest, but the fact was, something had him on edge too. Whoever they were after was unpredictable, but in a calculated way. There was a plan being acted out here, Micah was sure of that much, but it wasn’t one he understood and that bothered him. That alone was enough to make him want more than just himself committed to keeping Kate safe. Her family’s lodge was the best place for that. There would be plenty of people around, multiple law enforcement officers, including himself, her brother and her brother-in-law.

“What about one of the cabins? I saw on the website that Tyler has built a couple new ones near the lodge.” That was the ideal situation in his opinion. They’d be close enough to get help but far enough away that if someone did come after Kate, it might not endanger her family or cause a stir.

It was better than going back to the crime scene that was her house. Micah hadn’t had nearly the time he’d wanted to have to clear the place before he let either one of them sleep in it. Though the police had finished processing the scene, they weren’t responsible for cleaning up the blood. Kate didn’t need to sleep in a house that still looked like an active crime scene, even if it technically wasn’t anymore.

“I don’t want anyone hurt because of me.”

But she was wavering, as much as Kate ever did which wasn’t much, but maybe enough that Micah could convince her this was the best idea. He heard it in her voice, the way it wasn’t quite as solid as it usually was.

“No one is going to get hurt.”

“You hope.”

Micah didn’t say anything else, didn’t know what he could say. She was right that he couldn’t offer her any guarantees, but really, would someone like Kate even want that
