Chapter Four: Bliss

It took them forty-five minutes to make a ten minute walk and Ajax knew time was of the essence as he pushed the doors to the factory open with one massive paw. He carried his charge into the warmth of the massive building and nearly collapsed from the intense effort. Only the way Ethereal slid from his back kept him upright. He turned to see her and his heart stilled in his chest. One, two, three and adrenaline slapped him hard in the gut. She wasn’t moving and her precious face was covered in the slick sleet of frost.

Instantly Ajax changed, heedless to his own naked state. Picking her up, he moved her to the inner rooms where fires roared, lit by his fellow polar bear guard brothers. “She’s going to freeze to death,” he said, laying her on a table.

“Strip her down,” Drew said, a no-nonsense tone giving his voice the clear-cut command Ajax appreciated. He started to do as his friend said. “When she’s naked, bring her closer to the fire and we’ll make a sort of cocoon around her. Body heat is the best way to keep her warm.”

Ten minutes later, Ajax carried Ethereal, naked and motionless, to the hearth. He laid her down gently, half afraid one wrong move would shatter her. “Lie down over her,” Drew admonished. “We’ll all take a side.”

Ajax did as he was told, lying over the woman who’d so solidly captured his heart. “Just don’t squash her,” Drew said, a small grin playing over his lips. For the next two hours, the men changed positions, all taking turns keeping Ethereal warm without jeopardizing her modesty. When she began to whimper, they covered her with blankets and someone had the mental acuity to make her something warm to drink.

“I wish I’d thought to bring her soup with me, at least we could have eaten something good.”

“Cookies and cocoa will have to do,” Drew said, holding out mugs and a basket of the best cookies around.

The wind howled and the temperatures never rose above a mortal seventy-five below the entire three days it took for the polar vortex to blow through. When it finally relented, Ajax breathed a massive sigh of relief. Thanks to his colleagues they’d all, including Ethereal, managed to survive.

Ajax turned when Ethan slapped him on the back. “I can’t thank you enough.”

“There’s nothing to thank any of us for,” Ethan grinned. “We’re a team, brothers. And if you promise not to punch me, I’ll go ahead and tell you that you couldn’t have chosen better than her.” Ajax smiled when Ethan gestured toward Ethereal. “She suits you like no other woman could.”

“Don’t start on me about that fated mate crap.”

“Not,” he smiled. “I’m just stating a fact. Not to mention she’s hot as hell.”

Ajax stared at him, hard. Ethan laughed and held his hands up. “Just stating the obvious. Glad to see you finally found the woman you were looking for.”
