Chapter Twenty-Seven

S unday morning my phone rang. I’d been waiting on pins and needles since six for that call. It was now ten. I didn’t sleep well after the father-daughter dance. When I did fall asleep, I dreamed about Carly.

“Are you up sleepy-head?”

I loved the sound of her voice.

“I am, I hardly slept last night.”

“How about we meet in Montrose? That way if I have a mad desire to take you in my arms we won’t stand out?”

I laughed. “Wherever you want, whenever you want, name the place and I’ll be there,” I flirted.

“Sam’s Place on Pacific. Are you familiar with the area?”

“Yes and no, but I’ll find it. What time?”

“One, will that work for you?”

“I’m jumping in the shower now; I’ll see you at one at Sam’s Place.”

“Can’t wait, bye now.”

The call ended, and I fell back on the bed hugging my pillow, kicking my feet, and giggling like a schoolgirl. I have a date with the woman in the red dress, she found me.

My happiness was off the charts. I had three hours to shower, do my hair and makeup, find something to wear and find Sam’s Place on Pacific in Montrose. Montrose was the gay area in Houston. I’d never spent time there because I didn’t consider myself gay, and I didn’t have any gay friends.

I showered and finished my hair and makeup in record time. What I wore was another story, I changed a dozen times. Discarded clothes filled my bed. I took a break and looked up Sam’s Place on my computer and saw pictures of people dressed in jeans, dresses, casual pants and shirts, and everything in between so, I opted for the new wide leg pants that had just came back in style, and a blouse, tucked in with rolled sleeves, and unbuttoned two buttons down from the collar.

I checked myself out in my floor-length mirror from every angle.

Looking good Ags. I winked at myself in the mirror. Slipping into a pair of low-heeled ankle length black suede boots, I bent over and zipped them, grabbed my purse, and slung it over my shoulder. Preening one more time in the mirror, I gave myself a thumbs up and headed downstairs.

My parents were at the bar in the kitchen eating lunch. Daddy swallowed his food and asked, “Where are you off to sweetheart?”

“I’m meeting a friend from work for a late lunch.”

My mother had to throw her two-cents in, “Thank god it’s not that Sydney Clarke. I heard she was back in rehab, is that true Aggie?”

“I don’t know, we quit hanging out a couple months back—I gotta go or I’ll be late. See y’all later.”

I was out the door fast. I didn’t want them in my business. Maybe I should have taken that apartment. The drive to Sam’s Place wasn’t bad, it wasn’t far from where I lived on Memorial Drive. Carly sat on a bench in front of the place waiting for me. I smiled from ear to ear as I approached her.
