If Luis was right, and he was afraid that he was, then Juliaâs life was at risk. For a moment, he imagined a world without Julia. The thought hit him with the force of a train that had jumped the tracks. They approached the truck and he tried to think of something to say. There were no words.
And then, his eye was drawn to the first-aid kit that sat on the driverâs seat, and more importantly, to the evidence envelope inside. âI found something,â he said. Stretching across the seats, Luis opened the kit and retrieved the bag.
âWhat is it?â Julia asked.
âProof that Darcy had an accomplice, at least for the killings of her parents.â
Taking the envelope, Julia read the diary entry through the translucent plastic. âWho is the Watcher? Bethany Edwards?â
âYeah, but she has an alibi for Tom Dolanâs death.â
âCould be another friend.â
âDidnât Chloe Ryder work at Darcyâs high school? She was a social work intern or something.â
With a nod, Julia said, âI think youâre right.â
âThere was a yearbook upstairs,â said Luis. âWe can take it back to Pleasant Pines and show it to Chloe.â
âDonât you think we should search the rest of the house?â
âI think weâve done enough. If we need to, we can come back.â
She nodded. âIâll get the yearbook.â
Luis wasnât about to let Julia out of his sight, not even for a few minutes, especially since she was being stalked by a killer. âIâll go with you,â he said.
Thankfully, she didnât argue. Within a few minutes, theyâd returned to Darcyâs room, retrieved the yearbook and resecured the home. They took a few minutes more to clean and bandage the cut to Luisâs leg. The rest of the injuries he left to heal on their own.
âDidnât Robert Carpenter say something about the homecoming dance and a prank that Bethany played?â said Julia, flipping through the pages of the yearbook.
âYeah, that Bethany cut off all of Darcyâs hair. And then today, Bethany denied it all. We decided that either Robert or Bethany is lying.â
âHereâs an easy way to find out which one,â said Julia. She opened the yearbook to the section that covered the homecoming festivities. Pep rally. Football game. Parade. âAh, the dance.â
Luis looked over her shoulder as they scoured the pictures. Second page, bottom left corner. There was a picture of two kids, holding hands and awkwardly dancing. He read the caption. ââSenior Robert Carpenter with his date, Darcy Owens.ââ
âLooks like Darcy attended the dance after all,â said Julia.
âIt also looks like Robert lied to us,â he replied. âI think we need to pay him a visit.â
âThis morning, Robert Carpenter told us that he grew up near Darcy,â said Julia as she slid behind the steering wheel of the truck. âI wonder if his parents still own the house? Itâll be an easy drive and who knows what they might say.â
Luis nodded, but his mind was elsewhere. If Tom Dolanâs killer was really stalking Julia, then for Luis, learning the killerâs identity had gone from a professional priority to a personal one.
