Bobby went back to the hotel and tried to take a nap, but he could not sleep. The nightmares started whenever he closed his eyes. He washed his hands every five minutes. He had a pounding headache. Aspirin didn’t help. The lack of sleep affected his mood. He experienced depression, paranoia, and knew he had to control it. When he was with Wynter, everything was fine. He called her.

“I can’t talk, I’m working.”

Jake thought she was talking to John, so he mouthed the words that he had a book for John. She did not want anyone to know Bobby just propositioned her on the phone. She loved it. The game aroused her. She would tell Vince and Jake about her and Bobby when she knew it was not a hit and run.

“I’ll call you.”

Disconnected.

She asked what the plan was with Ricky.

“I’m only a consultant, you two know the geography, but I suggest we go to the source. We should talk with Ricky’s boss.”

“You want to go to there? Are you crazy? I would like to see my pension, maybe go fishing with her old man someday,” Vince said.

Wynter’s face showed a high level of concern.

“You think that’s a good idea?” she asked.

“I’m positive it is. That is where I used to get some of my best information, the street. If you are not barging in with an arrest warrant, you will find gang members can be helpful, if the issue does not affect them. Besides, they will be proud of Ricky for standing up to us, but they don’t want to see him locked up for nothing.”

“Have you done it before?” Wynter asked.

“I once broke a serial killer out of jail to help me catch another serial killer. I’m not going into that right now, but— Oh hell, come on, you two can wait in the

car.”

Vince nodded in agreement with Wynter. It made sound police judgment to them. They would stay in the car with riot gear on, while Jake went where no police officer has ever gone before. Wynter’s thoughts wandered. She wanted another passionate night with Bobby. She hoped the relationship would never end. She could not explain how she had fallen in love so fast then her thoughts returned to the job. They walked toward the car.

“This is stupid,” Vince said.

Wynter called Sanchez for the address.
